Feeling a bit of writer’s block? Try using a writing prompt generator to wake up that creative genius! Here are 5 free writing prompt generators you can try.

Seventh Sanctum

Seventh Sanctum can give you random first lines, or random ideas for names, settings, technology, magic, and more.

Random Word Generator

This site can give you a variety of random writing prompts, from complete sentences to numbers, to names, to parts of speech (e.g., nouns, verbs).

Squibler

This site will give you a random first line, and then allow you to write for five minutes to continue that story.

Story Shack

Story Shack is a bit more of a robust writing prompt generator because it can give you a word count, genre, character, a material, a sentence to use, and a bonus option. For example, I ran one and was given a word count of 200, the genre of drama, the character of a fat baker, the material of a wooden cross, the sentence “He can change,” and the bonus of “Your character is dying.” All of this together make it easier to put together something that you could either use in your book, or just use as a creative exercise.

Song Lyrics

Song lyrics can be a great writing prompt. Choose a random song on your playlist and use a line from the song to inspire you.

I highly recommend a card set called The Story Engine, created by Peter Chiykowski. There are different types of cards — Agents (characters), Engines (motives), Anchors (objects, locations or events), Conflicts (self-explanatory), and Aspects (adjectives to describe other cards). You deal them out in different arrangements to build simple or complex prompts, and there’s a guide book that gives a variety of ideas for building prompts. He also created various expansion packs in different genres, and another set with cards for world-building. I like to build a prompt, write it down, then do a paragraph or two expanding on it.
