Becoming a good writer is a process that is continually developed, and the skill requires constant practice and study. There are several books that will make you a better writer, making this process easier. These books offer advice on how to sharpen writing skills, while emphasizing the essence of upgrading existing knowledge to become a good enough writer to attract readers all over the world.

So let’s take a look at the essential books that will make you a better writer. Always keeping in mind, of course, that the craft of writing requires writers to continually read informative books and foster a positive attitude toward upgrading existing skills.

Books that Teach the Basics of Language

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft
Books such as On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King provide the basis of the elements of language, especially for a novice writer. By reading this book, you are able to understand the style, grammar, and the logic behind the rules, so you can apply them in your work. Books that focus on the mechanics of language expound on vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation, and how text can miscommunicate meaning when you break the existing rules. It is essential to master the basics of the language first and this book can help.
On Writing Well
On Writing Well by William Zinsser also provides the importance of using the mind when understanding the mechanics of language since this will promote creativity. Understating language enables you to know that there are different types of writing depending on the genre. Then you can know which vocabulary to use with your intended audience.

Books that Emphasize Genre Writing

Once Upon a Time It Was Now
As a writer, it is essential to find books that are tailored to your genre, especially after deciding which genre works for your craft. For example, for a historical fiction writer, the book Once Upon a Time It Was Now by James Thom would be appropriate because the author provides the details on how to conduct research on the required time period.
For nonfiction, emphasizing on genre writing also enables the writer to reflect on the different structures of writing tasks, such as explanatory essays, blogs, articles, and even journals. You are able to analyze different citations and references and see which ones are appropriate in supporting your evidence. You can also to differentiate reference formats and their outlines. This displays your research integrity, so the audience is able to view the information as credible.

Books that Focus on Structure

Save the Cat
Structure focuses on how to frame the literary form to ensure that the audience comprehends the message. How a writer organizes the idea determines if their work is readable and relatable to the audience. Books such as Save the Cat by Blake Snyder teach a writer how to focus on ideas and steps such as using a notebook to outline a story before starting the actual work. All the sections should be linked together in a logical manner to show the reader that the ideas have been carefully researched. Every literal form has a beginning, middle, and an end, and learning the best approach to arrange these parts offers a platform for a writer to become good at writing.

Books that Focus on Writing Unique Content

Write. Publish. Repeat.
The digital savvy reader is able to access content from the internet free of charge to meet their needs. To turn this audience into purchasing readers, the content needs to be unique to be worth their money. Books such as Write. Publish. Repeat encourage writers to establish content that is creative, is unique, and addresses the needs of the reader.

Books that focus on structure, the basics of language, genre writing, and unique content enable the writer to create content that attracts the reader. I believe it is therefore essential to read books constantly in order to become—or continue to be—a good writer.
