Linc
Nothing could have prepared me for what happened the night I planned to tell Magnolia the truth about everything.
One knock at the door changed it all.
Magnolia
I gave him my heart. I put my trust in him.
I thought, after discovering who Linc really is, that we’d get past things.
What he’s being accused of torments my soul, but I know I need to hear him out. Let him tell me his side of things.
I still feel safe with him. I still need him like my next breath. How do I handle what he’s telling me?

Barrett is back with the second installment in her Back to Life Duet, this time focusing on the trials and tribulations of Linc McCombs/Kaden Shafer/Hollis Kirkpatick. The first book, Karaoke Queen, laid the foundation for the reader getting to know Magnolia Hart, Linc’s girlfriend and daughter of a country music legend. Following their meeting and karaoke duet competition, both recognize kindred spirits in one another. Both suffer from abandonment issues, and both have experienced significant mental health issues. But Linc is not an open book, so to speak, he’s got lots of secrets that he has shared with only one other individual – his best friend, Kyle.
This volume deals with those secrets and with the growing fame of Linc/Hollis (yes, the name discrepancy is finally explained) and Magnolia, along with the increasing tensions of their success. It actually plays out a bit like a good country song, including an ex-wife, two kids, and more prison time. It is a bit long on conversation and commiseration between the two protagonists but does a satisfactory job of tying up some loose ends. This really is not a stand-alone novel. In my opinion, it would be best to read Book 1 to fully comprehend the background of Barrett’s characters. 4 Stars.
