Do you like to read in bed? I love reading under the cozy covers. Here are a few pros and cons of reading in bed that I’ve discovered. Are there any you can add to the list?
Pros:
- You’re cozy under the blankets.
- If you’re up late reading, it’s not a problem if you fall asleep (no waking up later in a weird position on the couch with an aching back).
- If you’re reading at night, you can put away the book at a good stopping place, instead of having to haul yourself up from the couch or a chair to go to bed (and then somehow start another chapter on your way to bed, further cutting into your sleep time).
- Reading at night can relax you and lessen stress, readying you for sleep.
- Reading can be a form of meditation or hypnosis that reduces anxiety.
- Reading can be part of a bedtime routine that makes falling asleep easier.
- Reading before bed can increase your quality of sleep.
- In the morning, you can just roll over, grab a book, and read. Best way to start a morning!
Cons:
- It’s easy to drop a book on your face.
- Reading in bed can encourage positions that create muscle aches.
- You often have to hold the book at an awkward angle, resulting in sore arms. (But, exercise, right? Maybe this one isn’t a con either.)
- You may just end up reading through the night. (Buuut, maybe that’s not a con?)
- If you’re reading on a screen, the blue light can make it more difficult for you to fall asleep by reducing the production of melatonin (but blue light filters can largely combat that).
- If you usually have trouble falling asleep, reading in bed can train your body not to fall asleep in bed, leading to even more trouble falling asleep.
- Or you might have the opposite problem, where you fall asleep right away if you try to read in bed.

Happy reading.
Absolutely. Every night. It’s part of my routine, and like dogs, I like routine. 🙂
Of *course* I read in bed… what reader doesn’t?? It’s not like we’re terrorizing little old ladies or traumatizing wee widget kittens, we’re JUST reading in bed. We’re comfy & cozy, we’ve already turned the heat down as we have our electric mattress pad/blanket/heating pad/hot water bottle/etc. up & running, and we pee’d before hitting the sack (which we don’t do when we flop down on the couch at 7:30 pm) thus, we’ll likely sleep longer & deeper when we do nod off. My bedtime reading appliance is my phone, and it’s on its charging cable… if I drop it (usually over the side of the bed), the charging cable is set up so it doesn’t quite hit the floor… it dangles about 2″ short of the floor for the rest of the night, charging and most happy. 😉
I should have known it wouldn’t work out when I discovered my last ex-husband didn’t read in bed *and* he needed full darkness and silence to go to sleep. A lot of dozing off by me, book still in hand, neck sorta aching, in my recliner, and then tip-toeing to bed at zero-dark-thirty. ~~sigh~~
Firstly how do you fall asleep on a book? Obviously you’ve been reading the wrong books.
I do read in bed, but I think my biggest problem is not knowing when to stop…nothing can distract me or grab my attention.
I do read in bed every night for about an hour…or until I fall asleep on my ipad which does happen. Then I wake up put the ipad away and go back to sleep. Sometimes I read too long and sleep in but I am retired so I can do so.
Love to read in bed!! Often more than not I do fall asleep reading. And I have dropped my reader on my face.
Reading in bed definitely has more pros than cons. Another is that if you tend to read until your vision blurs (I do), you don’t have to grope your way to bed, thereby risking a broken neck. Arguably, reading in bed could save your life.
Haha I love this!
