Galapagos for Kathryn, Costa Rica for Riya, although Kathryn would like to add that Costa Rica is her favorite place on earth and is currently in Costa Rica as she’s typing this

We both drive Teslas, which we LOVE, but Elon, meh

Favorite Sport

Tennis for Riya, her daughter plays like 5 days a week. Kathryn has no interest in sportsball, but is OBSESSED with The Olympics, hello Simone Biles!

Mountains or Beach? Why?

Kathryn loves the mountains more because she’s terrified of the sun. She will go to the beach if it’s raining or she can sit in the shade. Riya also prefers the mountains because of the sun, we are oncologists after all

Pet Peeve

We both have incredibly busy oncology practices so we absolutely HATE when we’re running behind, which is every day, just by the nature of the practice. By the time our patients are roomed, blood is drawn, vitals are complete, blood work is back, it’s been an hour. And then we walk into a patient’s room and they ask “did you forget about me?” Of course not! We were waiting for your labs to come back, we were telling another patient their diagnosis, we were discussing side effects with another patient.

Dylan, she’s a little bit of the both of us. She’s smart, fierce, but also a little timid sometimes, but goes after what she wants.

Where Do You Live?

Long Island, but we both prefer mountains! In medicine, which you will learn IF YOU READ OUR BOOKS, (aggressive plug), that you don’t get to choose where you do your training. You interview for residencies and fellowships, then you rank them in the order you prefer, then the hospital ranks everyone they interviewed, then all this is plugged into an unknown secretive magic algorithm, and it spits out where you’re going. Once it tells you, it’s nearly impossible to change. So this algorithm chose both Kathryn and Riya to do our hematology and oncology fellowships on Long Island, and here we have stayed!
