December 1891, New York City
After rejecting the unwanted advances of her boss, Vivian Leete loses her job as a seamstress and is kicked out of the boardinghouse above the shop during a snowstorm. With no family or friends to turn to, she takes the only chance she sees to survive and heads west to Colorado as a mail-order bride.
