Gladiators fought to the death in ancient Rome. The Holy Inquisition burned heretics at the stake and vast crowds turned out to watch. That sort of entertainment is banned today but don’t think it doesn’t still go on.

Anything is possible, given the right circumstances. Sadists will pay a fortune to see others suffer. Psychopaths, perverts and fanatics can always be found to re-enact the horrors of the past. If there is a big enough demand for something, someone will make money out of it.

And, don’t expect the police to intervene. That doesn’t always happen. When the sadists are protected by people in high places, an ordinary police officer’s hands are tied. That’s what The Tangled Web is about.
