Description
Gods, humans, and monstrous beasts engage in prodigious drinking bouts, contests of strength, greedy schemes for gold, and lusty encounters. Included are tales of Odin, the wisest and most fearsome of all the gods; Thor, the thundering powerhouse; and the exquisite mafic-wielding Freyja.
This is an entertaining and informative book containing 32 myths from Norse Mythology.
In this volume the gods and goddesses in the Nordic pantheon are introduced to the reader as flawed beings who make mistakes and who aren’t omnipotent.
Each myth has its own set of notes at the back of the book which are well worth reading immediately after each story.
The author captures the richness and humour of the Norsemen and presents the gods in their raw state without trying to justify or Christianise their adventures.
My favourite chapters were those interpreting the mystical kennings – I love the rhythm of these excerpts as well as the deep meanings behind the words.
This book makes a good introduction to the reader who is new to the Nordic myths as well as providing a refresher course for those who haven’t dipped into these wells for a while. Eminently re-readable!
