Eighteen-year-old millworker Juliet Forshaw is the only one who stands between keeping her family together and out of the poor house. With her father dead, and her mother incapacitated from a terrible injury, Juliet soon learns that the world gives nothing for free.

As Frank persists in his kindness toward the family, Juliet is astonished to discover that she has developed feelings for Frank. Yet even as she begins to trust Frank, and believe that she could have a new life, her dreams are dashed when an ugly truth comes to light and Juliet’s true circumstance is revealed.
