Description
Eighteen-year-old millworker Juliet Forshaw is the only one who stands between keeping her family together and out of the poor house. With her father dead, and her mother incapacitated from a terrible injury, Juliet soon learns that the world gives nothing for free.
As her family wastes away before her eyes, and hunger gnaws at their bones, Juliet is forced to make drastic decisions which change her forever.
Using her wits and her will to survive, Juliet makes an unlikely friend in Frank Milburn, an associate of the harsh and exacting mill supervisor, Pete Todd. Mistrustful and afraid, Juliet doubts the sincerity of Frank’s kindness, expecting that he too will seek to extract a price.
As Frank persists in his kindness toward the family, Juliet is astonished to discover that she has developed feelings for Frank. Yet even as she begins to trust Frank, and believe that she could have a new life, her dreams are dashed when an ugly truth comes to light and Juliet’s true circumstance is revealed.
Can Frank forgive Juliet for her deception, or will the path she has chosen lead her, and her family, to the destruction Frank has tried to save them from?
