Description
The magical island of Kalaya is dying, along with its Sentinel.
The Assembly controls Kalaya. Originally set up to govern, they now persecute those with magic and exile them to the Turrak Mountains. Tei, a tailor’s daughter, has always hidden her magic, but when her father’s old friend visits and warns them to flee to the mountains, she must leave her old life behind.
On the journey, an attack leaves her father mortally wounded. He entrusts her into the care of the exiles and on his deathbed makes a shocking confession. Tei joins the exiles search for their new Sentinel—the only person capable of restoring the fading magic. But mysterious Masked Riders are hunting the Sentinel too, and time, as well as hope, is running out.
Against mounting odds, it will take friendship, heartache, and sacrifice to succeed, but is Tei willing to risk everything to save the island magic?

The Lost Sentinel by Suzanne Rogerson 4/5
I enjoyed reading this fantasy novel. It’s book one of the Silent Sea Chronicles and I’ve already got books 2 & 3 on my kindle waiting to be read!
The island of Kalaya is dying, the magic fading. Tei is appointed by the mystics in exile to find a new Sentinel, guardian of the magic.
There’s a good blend of realism and magic and well drawn contrasts between the characters and their cultures.
There are multiple viewpoints that are easy to follow and three main storylines; Tei, Brogan and Farrell.
Farrell’s ship life and home life are well portrayed with a sense of impending doom from the start.
Brogan’s farm life and town life are completely different even though they’re only a day’s ride apart. The uncomfortable position he’s placed in is made clear from the very beginning.
And Tei’s discovery of who she really is and what her role is to be, is beautifully portrayed.
There are tragic deaths, heroic rescues and love found and lost. This is a story about discovery and endurance.
Ideal for fantasy lovers including YA readers.
