In the not so distant future, Alpha-Earth is still reeling from the devastation of climate change and the decimating killer plagues unleashed by the HAM—the Holy Allah Movement.

But, as detective Mary Ward Carpenter learns, the forces of terrorism have other weapons in their arsenal to continue their punishment of the West. They have operatives skilled in deception, decoys, and creating false trails to keep protectors like Mary Carpenter looking in all the wrong places. On top of that, some of these operatives are perfectly matched to Lieutenant Carpenter with skills and abilities equal to hers.
