Description
“What if I told you I know a secret? Not surprising, we all do. What about a hundred secrets? Still not interested? What about thousands of secrets from hundreds of people? Welcome to my brain, and the brain of every therapist I know.” Secret Keeper is a peak behind the curtain of therapy, sharing some of the stories and lessons I’ve learned with and from my clients honoring client privacy along the way. The journey highlights the struggles of vulnerability and fear and the reasons therapists become helpers. This book hopes to demystify the process of therapy and encourage anyone to seek the support we all deserve.I hope you will enjoy the magic of connection and feel we were never meant to go it alone.
In Secret Keeper: the Joys and Struggles of Being a Therapist, Marcia Kostoff highlights many benefits of therapy as well as models the path she walked as a therapist. She gives readers many anecdotes from real clients to help illustrate the many reasons people seek out therapy—everything from hearing voices, to suicidal ideation, to a sudden loss that left someone reeling. Each of these stories highlighted each person’s humanity, the power of connection shared over consecutive therapy sessions, and the strength each person found inside of him or her to overcome the difficult moments. As Marcia points out, therapy is an individual decision, but she also offered numerous compelling reasons for each reader to try therapy for themselves.
Marcia Kostoff did a really nice job addressing the reasons many people don’t attempt therapy—either we feel our needs aren’t pressing enough, we are scared we can’t leave if we don’t like the therapist, or we have difficulty trusting new people with our own personal challenges. Her stories illustrated several client’s experiences, but also offered an interior lens for readers to “taste test” therapy, which, for me, seemed to lessen the fear associated with any therapy appointment. Her experiences at several different therapeutic settings offered a range of examples and issues and demonstrated to readers the many ways they themselves could ask for support. I like the way Marcia used patient examples to show readers how to ask for the type of therapy they’d like or how to move forward if they don’t feel they are clicking with their therapist.
In, Secret Keeper: the Joys and Struggles of Being a Therapist, author Marcia Kostoff offers a unique perspective rarely heard from the therapist’s point of view. Readers will learn that therapists are real people who don’t always know all of the right things to say, or have all the answers. With this message, readers will enjoy learning that therapy is all about connection. This message is very uplifting and supportive. Readers will find this extraordinary book informative, comforting, and a very rewarding read.
