A delightful collection of 7 supernatural stories with horrific elements to them. Also contains 6 poems and 3 articles.
My favourite poem is The Sacred Cats of Burman by Lavinia Kumar, where a cat “turned its face, its tail, dark colors of earth / drew into its eyes the sapphire sky.”
The articles are fascinating; three completely different essays discussing the writings of Arthur Machen, the meanings behind Bride of the Gorilla and, a short piece on paranormal experiences.
The short stories are well written, totally different in tone and execution and held my attention from beginning to end.
My favourite tale is “Foretastes of the Grave” by Robert J Krog, which tells of a murderer punished for his crime. He has to live in a half-world, or death world until his execution. I enjoyed the themes of confession, redemption and acceptance of death and loved the uncomfortable ending!
Missing You by Sophia Adamowicz is a creepy ghost tale which leaves you guessing the worst. Winds of Aeolus by Susan E Rogers is a visceral tale that’s put me off wind sculptures forever! Them Boogers Will Get Y’all by Ginger Strivelli has a lovely narrative voice that’s totally at odds with the subject matter. Thanks for the Memories by Mike Murphy is a split narrative story that reveals bit by bit what’s led to the current situation. The Man With Red Hands by AK McCarthy is a sad tale of vengeance. And The Old Fireplace by Jade Jiao has put me off entering any Care Home currently located in an old house!
I also love the cover illustration by Mat Kaminski which encapsulates the eerie tales and poems within.
