Emma is a bit stubborn, hot-headed, single-minded, and always has some wild fantasy racing through her mind. But when Ben tells her that he is leaving to enlist in the army, her life changes forever. She struggles for many years, unhappy with life’s turn of events, and bitter with her old friend for leaving her behind. And when he suddenly returns twelve years later, she has a hard time accepting him back into her life.

Ben has spent his entire life as the son of a poor farmer and decides he wants something more for himself. He leaves his entire life as he knows it behind for a life in service and finally returns home twelve years later, as a lieutenant. He hopes to reunite with his old friend but finds out she has endured many years of hardship in his absence.
