Description
I love my job, as a magical agent I rid the streets of the magical scum on this earth plane.
But I was forced to make a choice and its haunted me ever since.
My partner is so incompetent and just wet his pants.
And of course the Portal Agency has a different agenda all together.
So, now I’ve been teamed up with one of them . . .
Despite being cute and easy on the eyes after looking at crime scene photos all day.
Everything he does has me rethinking who and what he is.
I just hope I’m not sending the wrong signals.
Cause it seems the more we work together the more he’s become a welcomed distraction from a killer who is far more lethal than I ever realized.
I know now, if I’m going to track down this savage killer I need to make a deal with a devil.
And keeping a strangle hold on this snake isn’t going to be easy.
I’m not a quitter.
No matter the cost.
I’m going to stop this dark magic monster from claiming more victims.
And maybe. Just maybe, my choice will be vindicated.

Rebecca and Jonah are on a routine check-in. Just checking the shadier slums for any unauthorized paranormal activity. Out of nowhere, through the low lying fog and dark comes a creature neither have ever seen. It is small in stature with long dirty hair and battered clothing. Suddenly it attacks Jonah and he does everything in his power just to keep the thing as far from him as possible. Soon he is laying in the alley unconscious, losing so much blood it is impossible to see where he is hurt. Rebecca rushes to his aid and attempts to separate the anomaly from Jonah but it turns and starts tearing into her inching up to her jugular vein with the longest, sharpest claws she has ever seen. Suddenly the two are thrown apart and Rebecca slowly begins to gain consciousness when she rolls to her side and sees Jonah in a crumpled position. Blood is leaking everywhere and Rebecca realizes she has but seconds to figure out how to slow the bleeding before he bleeds out. She starts ripping her clothes into strips and using them as tourniquets. This seems like a losing battle, there is so much blood, she has no way of knowing what is bleeding. As she reaches her hand under his shirt to check his heart she discovers a huge gaping slice, from his leg through his stomach up into his neck. Oh my God! How is she going to save her partner? Just then she hears the sound of sirens and flashing lights turn into the alley. Back-up has arrived, and none too soon.
For well over a month Rebecca is trapped within her mind in the ICU, unable to communicate and she has no idea what her condition is. After a long slow battle, Rebecca is starting to heal. Over a year of therapy and she is finally returning to duty. But, Jonah is still in a coma. If not for the sound of the monitoring machines you’d be sure he was a corpse. His complexion is ghostly pale, his complexion looks more like wax than skin. No one knows why he is unable to wake up. What this creature Caedes did to him, but they are the only two people to survive one of these attacks. Rebecca is placed on desk duty while waiting for a new partner to arrive, giving her time to fully recover. The humans and paranormal squads have agreed to cross-train their operatives. Rebecca’s new partner is a wolf shape shifter She is 100% against this since she has only hunted, brought to justice, or killed paranormals and does not trust one of them but if she wants to remain in the field she has no choice.
Her desk job is inputting cold cases into the database, from files well over 75 years in the past. Soon she becomes aware of the similarities of cases labeled Anomaly X and the current Caedes cases. Looking at the autopsy reports the wounds are in the same precise places and they proceeded from very sloppy work to very, almost surgical precise wounds. Looking closer Rebecca is sure these are done by the same type of creature. Or, maybe even the same one. But, this seems impossible since many of the first cases are so old.
Soon her new partner Dorian arrives and she explains her suspension. He concurs and they prepare a report to substantiate their evidence that Anomaly X and the current attacks are all identical. Wounds precisely in the same area, the person didn’t die from their wounds but simply bled out from the brutality of the attacks.
Their Captain states he will have to check into this. It is an unauthorized disclosure of the older cases and he needs to get authority to discuss them? This seems so very, very weird. Why would it be under so much security and what the hell is going on.
