Description
Luke Sprague is a super-quick sketch artist inspired by the racial caricatures of Harper’s Weekly magazine. Called to Washington to design the July 4th 1876 silver dollar, he reckons himself lucky, but his luck begins to dry up under the Texas sun as he finds himself broke, running from two brothers bent on killing him, and having to make a deal to get north with a wanted black cook.
But soon Abe, the cook, troubled by a shocking incident and a heart-pounding vision, questions whether it is worth losing his mind, life, and possibly soul to travel with a man he despises through a land where some are still fighting the Civil War.
Told by an old Abe to a writer in Depression era Georgia.
