Description
Jovienne wants to be a slayer, but first she’ll have to survive the test.
Orphaned at age nine, divine intervention upgraded Jovienne’s DNA and placed her in training with Andrei, a handsome but haunted recluse who taught her to kill. She excelled at every task, crushing hard and striving to impress him, unaware of his lies.
When her test is at hand, he reveals a partial truth that leaves her reeling. Worse, her demon opponent reads her mind and uses her tragic past and unrequited emotions against her. Unprepared for the non-physical aspects of this fight, Jovienne is overpowered. Desperate and on the cusp of death, her long-suppressed magic resurfaces.
Forced to do terrible things to survive, Jovienne struggles afterward. Without her consent, she’s been remade as an angel. This further enhancement makes her nearly immortal, but she’s bound in holy servitude. Forever.
A possessor demon, having heard she used magic during her test, comes to town and takes an attractive new host. He claims he can help her break her sacred shackles—for a price. Jovienne could have the freedom she craves but obtaining it would prove she’s the monster she fears she’s become.
This series is boldly irreverent and the twist in book three is mind-blowing. It has everything: angels and demons, ghosts, old magic and flaming swords, engaging and flawed characters, as well as universe-shattering plot twists. What’s more, it blends fantasy, horror, and science fiction in fascinating ways. This isn’t a pinch of genre crossover, this one packs more of a punch.
