Lady Cailin Gately’s mother sadly passed away after she was born. Her father was absent most of her childhood and had a penchant for drinking. Five years ago her father passed away, leaving Cailin under the care of her older brother Clayton. But instead of taking Cailin under his wing, Clayton sent her away to a finishing school. Cailin has recently turned 18 and is informed that Clayton wishes for her to return home and attend the upcoming Season. Her late mother’s sister—The Dowager Viscountess Harington—has kindly offered to sponsor her. She’s surprised to discover that Clayton is filled with remorse for having sent her way and wishes to make amends.

Neill Clarendale—The Duke of Clarenwood—has become a workaholic since his father’s untimely death six years ago. His late father was a prominent businessman whom Neill aspires to emulate. Neill is offered a marriage proposal to marry the Duke of Whistenshire’s daughter Lady Madalene. It’s a match his late father would have approved as it will strengthen their family’s business ties. But Neill feels conflicted about his decision to move forward with a marriage based merely on convenience. To take his mind off things, Neill’s mother convinces him to attend a house party hosted by the Dowager Viscountess Harington.
