Description
A combat cameraman serving his last mission in Iraq, Newman is ready to finally settle down with his fiancé. But on January 1st, 2002, an IED explodes, overturning his unarmoured Humvee. Death meets all his comrades while Newman falls into a coma.
Under the order of an anonymous CIA director, Newman is hidden from the world and sent to a Top Secret research facility where he is implanted with a device to capture and record his thoughts. And for twenty years, he remained there—until the day he awakened.
Awake and confused, Newman’s world is shattered. When the implanted device malfunctions and Newman is called back by the doctors, he ignores their request, following the soft whispers of a sacred crow to guide him home. The device continues streaming his thoughts to the military, so the doctors send for retrieval, and his days are numbered. The only options are submission or death.
The story begins in Afghanistan and a special team that uses their cameras as other soldiers use their guns. Each is attached to a Humvee and its platoon to record all aspects of the war.
Newman Jones joined the Arny to help his fellow man. He hates the war and having to record all the blood, pieces of men as the after-effects of the destruction the hidden IED mines create when they roll over them unsuspecting. Newman has swapped a Kool cigarette to the driver of his humvee for the use of his tape and headphones. Wonderful the tape is playing Vivaldi, the only music he enjoys. Suddenly there is a huge explosion and Newman is thrown clear. His friend from the other undamaged humvee rushes to his side but shortly a helicopter lands and two guys rush to Newman, put him on a stretcher, and load him into the helicopter. The other men, wearing suits, (who wears a suit in the Army and how did they arrive so quickly?) Begins a complex story that raises many questions in the reader.
Newman is whisked to a secret Army hospital where the Government has three coma patients they are studying and running a program on.
While reading this I had to wonder how easy it would be to erase a soldier’s existence and program them to discover how far they can go?
