As a passionate reader of historical fiction, I have always been captivated by the works of celebrated authors such as Patrick O’Brian, Mark Helprin, and Robert Harris. Their ability to transport readers to a different time and place, immersing them in richly detailed historical settings, has not only been a source of enjoyment but also a profound influence on my own writing. However, what truly sets me apart and equips me to craft compelling historical fiction, particularly centred around World War II, is my unique background and personal connection to the era.
Growing up, the echoes of World War II resonated deeply within my family. My father and uncles were among the brave individuals who served in the United States military during the war, and their experiences left an indelible mark on me.
My dad, a member of the artillery, landed in France shortly after D-Day, and I often found myself immersed in his vivid recollections of the journey with his battalion through war-torn Europe, culminating in their arrival at the Rhine River when the war finally came to an end. These personal narratives provided me with a wealth of insights into the human experiences and emotions that characterized World War II. They served as a foundation upon which I could build the narratives of my historical fiction.
My uncle’s story, in particular, stands out as he was captured by the Germans during the infamous Battle of the Bulge and endured the harrowing life of a prisoner of war. Listening to both of their first-hand accounts and seeing the tangible impact the war had on their lives instilled in me a profound respect and admiration for the sacrifices made by those who lived through that tumultuous period.
One of the fundamental principles I bring to my historical fiction writing is an unwavering commitment to historical accuracy. My undergraduate studies in history instilled in me a deep appreciation for the importance of precision when portraying historical events. I recognise that the essence of historical fiction lies in its ability to blend fact with fiction seamlessly. To that end, I am a stickler for detail, meticulously researching timelines, facts, and even the minutiae of historical settings.
For me, “good enough” is simply not good enough. I believe that the devil is in the details, and I am willing to invest countless hours in researching specific events to ensure that they are portrayed with authenticity. Whether it’s describing the interiors of warehouses or the distinct smell of wooden crates, my aim is to transport readers to a bygone era where they can not only see and hear but also smell and touch the world I’ve created. By infusing my narratives with these sensory details, I strive to make the past come alive in a way that resonates with readers on a visceral level.
My background and experiences have prepared me to write historical fiction that is not only grounded in meticulous research and historical accuracy but also infused with the personal connections and emotions that arise from my family’s involvement in World War II. My commitment to storytelling, inspired by the works of several authors, allows me to craft narratives that not only educate but also entertain and move readers. When you read my books, I hope you can feel my deep respect for history, my unwavering dedication to authenticity, and my passion for storytelling. Enjoy being transported back in time through the pages of my works!
