If you have a new baby on the way, or you’re just looking for new ideas to decorate your child’s bookshelf and display their children’s books, then we have a few ideas for you. Browse our themes and ideas below to get some inspiration.
1. Purchase a beloved stuffed animal character from a favorite childhood book.
Whether you’re sticking with classic Dr. Seuss characters, Curious George, Mother Goose, or anything in between, adding a stuff animal character to your child’s bookcase can really make the story come to life, and potentially become a favorite toy for years to come. It’s a win-win.
2. Forgo a traditional bookcase and try a book display instead.
While these bookcases don’t allow you to display things like stuffed animals, bookends, or action figures on them, these shelves are excellent for displaying the covers of all your favorite children’s books, which can be great decorations in and of themselves. Plus, these book displays are super cute and come in a variety of styles, so you’re sure to find something that will match your baby’s room.
3. Try hanging bookshelves
Another popular trend right now is to use hanging bookshelves. These bookshelves can be a great way to display some of your favorite books, while keeping them out of the reach of curious little hands until it’s story time.
4. Look for fun, themed items.
An easy way to bring your child’s bookshelf to life is to look for themed items that match the things they love. Whether you’re looking for items that match the books being displayed or are looking for items that will match the theme of the room, look around and you might be surprised to find that someone’s already created the perfect item for your child’s bookcase.
5. Try out a superhero theme
Superheroes are all the rage nowadays, and decorating children’s rooms to match their inner hero is more popular now than ever. So of course you should be able to decorate your bookshelves to match. Consider action figures or superhero bookends as your secret weapons to get your superhero bookshelf on theme.
6. Cute Zoo Animals
Whether you like stuffed animals or bookends, you can easily make your child’s bookshelf a little more cuddly by incorporating some fun animals into them. I’m personally a fan of bookends because they serve the double function of being cute while holding up my children’s books, which often don’t take up the full shelf. However, a plain bookend can be paired with a stuffed animal to achieve the same effect.
7. Take it back to the prehistoric era
Studies shows that 9 out of 10 kids will go through a dinosaur phase. So if you go for a dinosaur theme, chances are your kid will grow up to be the one who skips this phase. (Just kidding. I made this number up.) You can use stencils or your own art skills to add fossils or footprints to your bookcase to really take it to the next level.
8. Try a princess theme
Every little girl wants her fairy tale ending. Turn your little one’s bookcase into a castle of knowledge with a little DIY magic and some help from dolls and accessories. Or, if you’re not a DIYer, you can simply purchase a castle bookcase instead.
9. Or, make it easy on yourself and go for items designed for baby
Sometimes choosing and sticking with a theme can be hard, but you can still have an adorable bookcase even without a theme. Just look for those baby made items, and your baby’s bookcase will be cute in no time.
