There was one Christmas tradition growing up that I loved more than almost any other; it was our Christmas book holiday count down. Every year, my mother would wrap 24 Christmas books and place them under the tree. Every night before bed, one of my six siblings would take turns selecting a book to unwrap, and then we would read the book as a family. It was a great way to enjoy Christmas stories, build up to the excitement of Christmas day, and to spend time as the family. I have such fond memories from these evenings spent reading stories that I’ve begun buying my own Christmas books so I can start this tradition with my own family. Below are some of my favorite Christmas books to enjoy with my family.

I love the Byrd’s Christmas Carol by Kate Wiggin, written in 1878. My mother read that one to us each Christmas when we were children. I hunted until found an old copy to read to my children. I fill an entire bookshelf with Christmas stories for the holidays that can be read together or alone at any time. The stories coveer all ages.
My favorite Christmas story is a book that was given to me by my Aunt Edna when I was about eight years old. It is entitled “Pete and the Manger Men.” It is the story of a young boy who lives in great poverty with his Grandfather at “the end of the world” and his enchantment with a manger set he sees in a catalog for a local department store. After preventing the department store from being burnt to the ground by a careless employee, Pete becomes ill and in his delirium imagines that the characters in the manger set come and tell him their story. But these manger characters are not the normal characters – there is a robber, a Roman soldier who wears red mittens, an innkeeper who has vision in only one eye and so forth. It makes for a delightful change to the run of the mill Christmas nativity stories and Pete’s plight changes the people around him for the better at the holiday season as well. I do not believe that this book is in print any longer but it is available used through Amazon, etc.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
My all-time favorite for getting past the fluff & misconceptions to the real meaning of Christmas.
A must for all ages!
Such a heartwarming story, reminds me that Christmas isn’t just about presents. Christmas is about family, the birth of Christ, meeting strangers and doing the right thing.
