About the author
I'm an old man and getting older.
When I was a kid, my twin brother and I used to spontaneously make up stories. We had bunk beds and he would be on the top bunk and I was on the lower at night we would make up these stories as we went to sleep. We each had our list of characters and did their voices and we would run them through anything we saw or heard that day that we that was unusual, cool or fun. I think that exercise was a major influence on my creativity.
When my first daughter was small we drove to Sacramento from our home at least three times a month. On our way back Lisa would ask me to tell her a story. Stories about her troll dolls and magpies were her favorite.
I've had a number of stories in my head that I have wanted to write for many years. Starting in 2008 I began putting some of these stories down for other people to read. They were pretty rough in the beginning. I think they're getting better, and I hope you do to. I've currently got three more novels somewhere in the publishing channel.
I like to write Young Adult novels the best because that time of life is so full of energy, vitality, and enthusiasm.

Pros:
Interesting characters, good action, nice plot. I read all the way to the end and wanted to read the sequel. This is saying something since I really won't finish books if they're lousy. I liked the vampire boy and the interesting concepts there. We didn't have to wade through pages of sex to find a plot. I'd recommend it to teens. I thought the interaction at the school seemed realistic.
Cons:
The subtitle turned me off. That sort of information should be clear in the description without having to tell readers about it. But maybe that's just me. Also, if this hadn't been a deal on My Book Cave (they feature books with movie-like ratings and this fell into my preferences), I would never have picked it up because the cover isn't very attractive or compelling. It just doesn't look like a fantasy adventure with fighting scenes and magic, especially compared with the bestsellers. I would highly urge the author to do a new cover by someone who understand the genre. (BTW, I did pick up the sequel, and the cover is only slightly better but also completely wrong for the genre.)
As for plot, I didn't like the female main character leaving so abruptly in the end, because there seemed to be a lot left unexplained, but the story wrapped up satisfactorily enough.
Conclusion:
There was some violence in it and some kissing, but and I don't remember the My Book Cave rating, but there was no sex or profanity.
My rating for the story: 4
My rating for the cover: 2
Chuck is a freshman starting a new high school a month into the school year. He just needs to fly under the radar until he can get his bearings. Or that's the plan if Troy didn't have the bully and big man on campus personality and out to make his life hell.
So when Chuck ventures to make new friends, he has unexpected results, including the interest of two polar opposite girls as he tries to find a way to fit in.
I liked and disliked Shooting Stars by Philip Carroll. First it kept my interest the entire time and I kept reading to see what would happen next. I liked that the author didn't talk down to the reader. He respected the reader. So what threw me off? The trees. They talk and Chuck can hear them. Now if it was me, I'd be questioning my sanity but Chuck doesn't seem to acknowledge it or when he does, he passes it off as internal thought. So when it did happen I felt like slamming the book.

I loved the main character Chuck. He was honest and logical with his thoughts and very mature for a 14 year old. I think there is more than meets the eye with this character, which will hopefully be revealed in the follow ups. Hence, my only hang up is that the book ended too soon and I have a lot of unanswered questions!
Overall Shooting Stars is a fun and well-written read. I'd definitely recommend this book to young adults who love fantasy.
