Review
Hush Baby by author C. Vine is a gripping tale surrounding Kyle Rushton and his sour relationship with his live-in girlfriend Marlene. They have a son, Max, who is three years old. Max means the world to Kyle. Unfortunately, Kyle's see-saw relationship with Marlene was taking a toll on him and Kyle made the difficult decision to leave Marlene and Max and move in with his sister Sylvie.
Hush Baby is an interesting read about personal relationships. Author C. Vine did an excellent job developing the plot. The story began at a slow pace, however, it quickened in the latter half of the novel. I love the unexpected twists that were included in the story. In my opinion, the story literally took on a different feel and transformed into a suspense thriller. This tactic is very cleverly orchestrated by author C. Vine. It propels the reader to become more engrossed in the plot. I did not want to put down the book! The language is simple and easy to understand. What was refreshing was that the novel was written from the viewpoint of a male as opposed to a female. Normally, most stories outlining relationship woes are slanted in the favour of females. This welcome diversion from the norm speaks well for equality of the sexes. I loved the descriptive passages in the novel. I applaud author C. Vine for keeping her readers on their toes, wondering how the story would finally end. The staccato formatting of the final chapter was a good move. It suggests that the reader should accept unpredictability in the plot. I recommend this book to all readers who love suspense.

About the author
Personal Biography
I was born in Cape Town, South Africa but have lived in many different countries. I am the author of the self-help book Fear, Phobias and Frozen Feet as well as the novel Stop the world, I need to pee! a fictional account of the life and crimes of Fenella Fisher. In January 2010 I published The Case of Billy B which is a story about a father and son who face some immense challenges in life, including a psychopathic stalker. Not Telling is a story about two sisters and their relationship over the years; and the next in my Fenella Series, called CU@8. Other more recent novels of mine are Defective and Hush Baby.
In the past few years I've also written several children's picture books, a travel diary - The Great Mountain to Mountain Safari, an adult picture book The Colorful Art of Pain about coping with chronic pain, and a self-help for people coming out of a broken relationship, Survival Tips for the Suddenly Single. My latest book has just been released and is my first YA novel, The Freedom Club. It's a fictional account of bullying in a high school and how it affects different people involved.
In June 2009 I left China for good and moved on to Tanzania, where I stayed at the foot of Kilimanjaro. I have very eclectic tastes in most things - art, literature, cooking, writing, history, interesting discussions, making sausages and traveling. I think I have a good sense of humour but I can write about serious topics as well as completely offbeat off the wall stuff. Hopefully, I can cater to everybody's tastes. After Tanzania I moved to Kyiv, Ukraine then Cape Town, South Africa. Currently I live in Gjovik, Norway.

At the beginning I was wondering, why should I be so hooked up to this book, as no way could I associate myself with all these people or this banal situation of unhappy relationship. Then, maybe it was something in Kyle's personality that kept me reading. His being attached so much to his little son was appealing.
Then, after events began to develop in unexpected direction I was head deep in the reading. I could not put my Kindle down until I finished. Only at the end did it become clear that all those bruises on Max's body were not from beating.....
The book left me wondering about life, about people and their attitudes....
Only if we were more attentive to each other, were looking into knowing each other better, were eager to talk out the problems, were not afraid of taking legal and moral responsibilities.... before it is too late....
I highly recommend this book. This is not the first book of this author that I've read and I see that the author's creative writing skills grow with every book.
Now I can hardly wait till her next book comes out.
The only thing I didn't like about this book, and it in no way changes my rating, is that in the very beginning, Kyle referred to Marlene as "the bitch" almost ad nauseum. Even though the term was fitting for her, it was just a tiny bit overdone in my opinion. It didn't last for long though and it didn't negative affect the overall story for me. I will definitely be looking for more books from this author!
The demise of a shallow domestic relationship and the loss and grief that follows provides some good insight into family law in contemporary South Africa.
The second half of the novel, while unpacking a sordid family history around the taboo topic of familial infanticide, tends, on occasion, to be a bit repetitive with some details.
Overall this is a grammatically flawless novel with typical, but well developed, believable characters and a steep, well sustained arc.
If you're looking for a fast read that can keep you turning the pages this book is ideal.
