Recreance: an epic fantasy sci-fi adventure (The Aeternum Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition
GOLD MEDAL WINNER Readers' Favorite YA Epic Fantasy Award
When darkness rises, the young are called to stand against it.
Oren had always simply accepted the Ministry's authoritarian rule, until the day his mother and father were executed. With death on his heels he is thrust into the unforgiving wastelands, where his only hope for survival lies with an enigmatic old blademaster who might well be insane.
When Clem's home life falls apart, she finds herself stealing to survive...and getting rather good at it. She agrees to a high stakes Ministry heist and discovers a secret so dangerous, people are willing to die for it. On the run for her life, she escapes into the wastelands beyond the city walls.
When Oren and Clem again cross paths it is as near strangers, but with eyeless assassins close behind, there is little time to reconcile. In a desperate flight across the desert and beyond, two young outcasts must deliver their secret to the resistance, or risk the death of everyone they left behind.
Enter a world of epic swordfights, secret powers, waygates to other worlds, and monsters of unspeakable darkness by award winning author H.G. Chambers.

About the author
My name is Harold G. Chambers, and I'm a writer, though I haven't always been. Flying helicopters, programming, touring with a punk band, space pirating...these are all things that came before (okay, maybe not that last one).
Currently, I'm a hybrid—part stay-at-home dad, part author—making up outlandish stories that I hope people will continue to enjoy. When I'm not writing, wrangling, or reading, you'll likely find me throwing dice and slaying dragons.

Forced to grow up young, Oren and Clementine, are strong and filled with desire to right the wrongs in the world. They embark on separate quests than eventually intertwine while being hunted by the cruel Ministry from their city of New Arcadia. Their journey may bring them together, but they will be faced with hardships, betrayal, mysterious and never ending secrets and at times almost certain death. Will these two friends survive?
Final Rating: 5 Stars
Where this book truly shines is the setting and world building—the magic system, the blend of mysticism, science, and technology—it all enthralled me and kept me reading. Chambers has some wonderful descriptions of the desert outside New Arcadia, ans I felt like I was really there. It is clear he put a lot of thought into his world, and it pays off.
I did notice some occasional typos and lack of commas to separate phrases in dialogue. It did not detract too much from my reading experience, but I did notice it.
Overall, I would recommend this book. I give it 4/5 (more like a 4.5 out of 5) because I thought Clem was a bit Mary Sue-ish and the ending was a little rushed. Otherwise, if you enjoy world building and a nice blend of fantasy and sci-fi, this book is worth you le time.
You will be compelled to turn page after page nonstop as I was. Am reading the second book now. It is a nonstop exciting adventure! Had to repost this review as i messed up on the first one
Highly recommend.
To the author, thank you for giving us a great series!
The technology presented makes no sense. A two-mile-wide spinning disk which can suddenly flip on its axis just at the moment when our hero stumbles upon it and then navigates the spinning, flipping disk to reach a shaft in the middle which leads (after the flip completes) to an escape route. Of course, our hero was able to disable and re-enable some controls for this massive, critical piece of technology which is essential to the existence of a large city without ever having seen the controls before. Not to mention that this equipment was unguarded and untended during this subversive activity. A miles long hallway/tunnel which appears to have only two openings: it isn't a utility tunnel, a sewer of some kind, a cave network, no it is just a extended hallway which can be used to escape and appears to serve no other purpose. The rulers of the primary city have decided to kill everyone in the city with no reason given other than they can. Our heroes oppose this action and with little training in the magic which other experts have studied for more than 100 years apiece manage to defeat the rulers, the soldiers, and the supposedly unkillable mages who are trying to destroy their own city. Yay us.
I only gave it more than one star because the dialog is sort of fun (even if the actions make little sense). If you don't think about the world which the author built it can be fun. Reads like a video game which is fun in the moment but doesn't actually make any sense.

The two main characters, Clem and Oren, are teenagers. As one learns, they live in a closed city that is sheltered from the damaged world. The Ministry runs the city, and life is pleasant. Or is it? At the beginning of the story, they inadvertently come across a Breaker - a type of deadly interrogator the general population have no knowledge of. When Oren's great grandmother disappears instead of Ascending, Oren's family is threatened. A ko'jin named Khalil rescues Oren from destruction at the hands of Breakers and they travel away from the city and out into the world. And that's just the beginning of the story.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Chambers had my attention from the first page, and I just kept on reading. A real page turner. The worldbuilding is excellent, and very inventive, with creative monsters. Chambers certainly has an excellent imagination. It's not every day one comes across something so original, unencumbered by the numerous tropes that litter scifi.
I will be looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
