About this ebook

An impossible journey. A spoiled rich kid. It's a recipe for disaster.

Hale Firena has everything--looks, money, power, more girls than he knows what to do with. But in one night everything changes, as a bloody coup turns Hale into a penniless refugee on the run for his life.

Hale's not cut out for real life--the thought of holding down a real job is almost more horrible than the pirates and bandits chasing him. Is Hale's swagger enough to see him to safety, or has his luck truly run out?

Read the story of Hale Firena before he joined the Confectioner's Guild in this Confectioner Chronicles prequel novella.

I zipped right through this novella. I absolutely loved Hale's backstory. It was so much more complex than I would have imagined. I felt this story was a perfect companion to The Confectioner's Guild (I'm seriously having withdrawals from all the other characters in this story; I need more already haha). Hale was one of my favourite characters from the series, and reading his origin story of sorts really just adds more value to his character for me. I felt what happened to him and his entire family was thoroughly devastating; and really shapes his character in the first book of the series. I think this novella really embodied the complex relationships that a son can have with his mother, father and siblings. I could really feel Hale's pain and anguish during the attack and the events that led to an untimely death and a subsequent kidnapping. Finding out Griff's secret was awesome; I didn't see that coming.; and I loved every moment of the character! The final gamble really had my heart racing; I know Hale has the gift of luck but even still It was exhilarating!

About the author

Claire Luana grew up in Seattle reading everything she could get her hands on and writing every chance she could. Eventually, adulthood won out, and she turned her writing talents to more scholarly pursuits, going to work as a commercial litigation attorney.

While continuing to practice law, Claire decided to return to her roots and try her hand once again at creative writing. She has written and published four fantasy series: the Moonburner Cycle, the Confectioner Chronicles, the Knights of Caerleon, co-written with Jesikah Sundin, and The Faerie Race trilogy, co-written with J.A. Armitage.

She lives in Seattle, Washington with her husband and two dogs. In her (little) remaining spare time, she loves to hike, travel, binge-watch CW shows, and of course, fall into a good book.
