Brodie’s Gamble, Book Two, MacLarens of Boundary Mountain Historical Western Romance Series

“Every book of Shirleen's never fails to draw me in and make it impossible to put down until I devour it!”

Brodie MacLaren has a dream. He yearns to wear the star—bring the guilty to justice and protect those who are innocent. In his mind, guilty means guilty, even when it includes a beautiful woman who sets his body on edge.

Maggie King lives a nightmare, wanting nothing more than to survive each day and recapture the life stolen from her. Each day she wakes and prays for escape. Taking the one chance she may ever have, Maggie lashes out, unprepared for the rising panic as the man people believe to be her husband lies motionless at her feet.

Deciding innocence and guilt isn’t his job.

Brodie’s orderly, black and white world spins as her story of kidnapping and abuse unfold. The fact nothing adds up as well as his growing attraction to Maggie cause doubts the stoic lawman can’t afford to embrace.

Can a lifetime of believing in absolute right and wrong change in a heartbeat?

Maggie has traded one form of captivity for another. Thoughts of escape consume her, even as feelings for the handsome, unyielding lawman grow.

As events unfold, Brodie must fight more than his attraction. Someone is after Maggie—a real threat who is out to silence her.

He’s challenged on all fronts—until he takes a gamble that could change his life or destroy his heart.

Brodie’s Gamble, book two in the MacLarens of Boundary Mountain historical western romance series, is a full-length novel with an HEA and no cliffhanger.

The MacLaren's had a large ranch and it was expected that the children would stay and work it so when Brody MacLaren became the local sheriff instead, it didn't go over well, especially with his father. Even though Brody hadn't been sheriff long he'd had cattle rustling, saloon brawls and petty thefts to keep him busy. He never expected to deal with a murder so when Maggie King walked in his office saying she thought killed her husband, Brody was shocked. He always followed the law and wanted to do the right thing so he went back to the cabin where she said she killed her husband to make sure he was actually dead but the body was missing. After finding him in a shallow grave Brody had to put Maggie in jail for murder. Maggie had been kidnapped by some men when she was 18 years old then she was sold. To make things more complicated, the dead man wasn't actually her husband but the one who bought her and kept her captive. When Brody heard the whole story of Maggie's life with the dead man, he was determined to find out the truth behind the death. I enjoyed this historical romance. It had an unusual storyline and great characters. I can't imagine the horrible life Maggie had after being kidnapped. Then it got worse! After escaping from her captor and doing what she though was the right thing by confessing to possibly murdering him, she gets put in jail. Brodie was a wonderful man and terrific sheriff. I liked the way he went beyond his responsibilities by trying to find out what really happened to Maggie's "husband" even though he had done his job by putting the confessed murderer in jail. I really enjoyed this historical romance and I'm glad I got a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Oh That Scottish Brogue! The MacLarens are a very tight knit family, Yet Brodie MacLaren went against the grain when he became the local sheriff instead of following the rest of his family with farming. When he became sheriff, he thought he'd only be dealing with drunks, an occasional theft or mischievous prank, saloon brawls, and cattle rustling. He sure didn't think he'd ever be dealing with Maggie King, the lovely young woman who is accused of killing her husband. While his thoughts about the law, justice, and guilt have always been clear cut and dry, Maggie now has him rethinking that philosophy. His clear cut and dry way of thinking and handling the law has just become muddled, thanks to one Maggie King, thus making his growing attraction to her an impossible situation. Or has it? I really enjoyed these two characters. I really admired Maggie because of the strong person that she was! As for Brodie, all he had to do was open his mouth and cut loose with that Scottish brogue and the man was totally swoon worthy. What more could you ask for? Shirleen Davies is one of my favorite authors for historical romances, and with Brodie's Gamble she has once again reminded me why she's one of my favorites. *****I received this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions and viewpoints are my own.

Brodie, who is the sherriff of definite right and wrongs, must find out the truth with Maggie and her life story. Really like this author's family characterizations and the interaction between them. Good addition to the series that can be read as a standalone. Looking forward to the next Maclaren. Received authors copy.
