Magnifique! I am a big fan of Sandi Scott’s Seagrass Sweets Cozy Mystery, and although I started by reading the third book, “Madeleine Murder,” I really enjoyed finding out more about how it all began. The story weaves in several different motives for the crime, contemporary, realistic and engaging with a few dead ends, and an excellent “Wow! I didn’t see that coming!” conclusion. Sandi’s characters are well developed even for a book one. My favorite, of course, is Ashley, strong and capable, but vulnerable. I really like her BFF Patty who is very detail oriented, like me. Those who like a little ‘fur-friend’ in the mix will enjoy Dizzy, a Bitsa—“bitsa this and bitsa that.” Partial to French deserts and cuisine, Sandi’s mouth-watering descriptions sent me to the cupboard for a plate of macarons. The small town setting of Seagrass, Texas, issues with running a catering business, and memories of Paris play out in the background along with an easy to follow recipe for Napolean - A Creamy Puff Pastry Cake! I see a prequel in the future that gives us fans more details into the life Ashley left behind in Paris. There has to be a juicy mystery there.
Things go from good to bad when Ashely overhears an argument outside the ladies restroom and the woman is found dead the next day. It seems someone has poisoned one of Ashley’s cream puffs and is ruining the reputation of Ashley’s new business. Now Ashley (with the help of Ryan) is on the hunt for Colleen’s murderer to find justice and save her business. There are many suspects on her list and Ashley must delve into her past to find out who turned to murder to hide a secret.
This is a cozy mystery at its finest with lovable and relatable characters, lots of plot twists, and a female amateur sleuth that you can’t help but cheer for. This is a very promising new series that I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest to read.
On the plus side, the editing and proof reading were well done. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the author (and publisher) for making sure it was a well written work. Yes, that is a major pet peeve of mine. With this book, it would have been enough to make me quit reading. Also, I love Dizzy. She is great. I like the relationship between the heroine and Ryan. He seems like a good guy.
I didn't have a lot of issues besides not getting to meet the characters. However, there were some. For me the author makes assumptions that may or may not be valid but we don't know enough about prior relationships to know for sure. There were also several places where I'm sure the action was clear and logical in the author's mind but she forgot to bring us along with her and just took us from point a to point b leaving us to trust her that what happened in the interim wasn't important enough to talk about.
I would love to see the author revamp this book and re-release it because I think it could be a much better story. The bones are there, we just need to see more of the meat.

I can't wait to read the next one in the series.

A great start to the series, lots of fun, red herrings and twists to keep me guessing. I enjoyed this very much and look forward to Sandi’s next book.
