Somewhat Outdated but Excellent As a freelance editor and someone who has published four books myself, I am always curious about other authors' knowledge, tips, and advice about self-publishing. Unfortunately, in these days of the short read, most of the current crop out there are not substantial and are woefully incomplete. While no book could truly be complete on this topic, I quite enjoyed the depth and breadth of this book. It has been around for a long time and has a high star rating, both of which are always a good sign. The book is about what happens after the writing process, although brief parts of the first section do touch on writing itself. The topics in the rest of the book range from how to find an editor to how to price a book to the online booksellers’ algorithms to unscrupulous people who want to part you from your money as you go through the self-publishing process. The book is written in a friendly and conversational manner. There are certainly lots of topics here that the would-be first-time self-publishing author should consider—and even those of us who have been around the block a time or two. My only complaint is about the wonderful and expansive section that gives case studies about self-published authors. This edition of the book itself is now 2 years old, which is a long time in this digital age, and some success stories happened in what we could now call the heyday of self-publishing, before it became so saturated and overrun with books by content mills rather than real authors who have a passion for a subject or a genre. I would love to see an update about all that has changed in the first two sections of the book as well as some real-world success stories of people who've actually accomplished this in the last few years. Still, without these, though, the book still has a lot of food for thought and should be in the library of every would-be and actual self-publishing author.

This book has plenty of helpful information for those of us who dream of publishing a book. For most of us who have no idea where to begin this author provides the steps needed to get published. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
