About this ebook

Lisa Delaney drops out of law school to care for her four younger siblings after her parents are in a fatal car accident. The children beg to stay together rather than be split up among relatives. Lisa's aunts say her parents would want her to remain in school.

Lisa's fiance, Mike Brennan, in his rookie year with the NFL suggests he and Lisa get married immediately to give the kids a home. In her grief, Lisa searches for legal directives or a will her parents might have left--a fruitless effort--and finally agrees with Mike. They marry.

Moving from a rural town to a big city, they leave close friends behind. Mike is second backup QB for the Boston Riders and focused on his dream career. His potential earnings would solve all problems. Lisa insists the children are not charity cases, and she works full-time to supplement their income.

Lisa becomes overwhelmed with the responsibilities of daily life, and Mike is no help. Grief is a constant companion. She has no time or interest in socializing with other football wives. She twice tries to return to school, but winds up dropping out. When Mike moves them into a large, expensive house in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood, Lisa resents another upheaval especially one where she feels out of place.

Most of all, however she's haunted by thoughts of her parents' expectations. Is she a good enough mom? Are they proud of her? Slowly, the issues lead to a meltdown of the marriage.

Has love died? or has it been buried beneath the obligations faced by two very young people armed only with good intentions?
