Captain Perrin Shin, assigned to village Edge of the World, is out to do more than command the new fort. He’s determined to uncover the mystery of the Guarders: where they live, why they attack, and what they want. Suspiciously, none of their behavior has ever made sense. Mahrree Peto, a teacher in Edge, is also growing suspicious. Of the Administrators who promise to eradicate the Guarders, and of the arrogant captain they sent to protect Edge. It’s hard to know who to trust. The most powerful man in the world is also fascinated by trust, and precisely what it takes to destroy it. He’s looking for research subjects, and up in Edge a brash captain and a nosy teacher have caught his attention. Let the experiment begin. Part fantasy, part adventure, part humor, part romance, part mystery all equates to a wholly entertaining and unique family saga. Forest at the Edge Series--you've never read anything like this before. Think you know who to trust? Think you know the color of the sky? Probably not . . .

Mercer's book was a pleasant surprise, and was very good! It has an interesting plot, some intrigue, a bit of danger, a bit of romance, and is a clean, enjoyable read. The characters are well developed and not shallow--they act like people, and the reactions feel genuine. Young adults (and the older type, too) should enjoy this book. She has woven a rich tapestry, and the tantalizing pattern is beginning to show; I look forward to the rest of the series so I can see the entire picture, and not just the start. I am a picky reader; I hate thin plots and shallow characterizations, and many books I've had recommended to me in the last several years have been just that--thin, shallow, and disappointing, with their blurbs often promising more than the book contains. Forest at the Edge of the World does not disappoint.

Trish Mercer has created a world where nothing is as it seems. 500 original families are created on a planet made for them, and the Creator teaches them all they need to know to thrive on the new world. Everything the Creator taught is left in the Writings, which is the sponsored religion.

For the first few centuries, the world was a monarchy, with the King's over the years being horrible to the populace. At one point, an explorer is sent out to find usable land outside the small habitable space which is now populated. The explorer is killed, and the guards, along with a lot of the population flee into the forest - as it seems a secret society was living amidst everyone which opposed the monarchy. These people become known as the Guarders. They live in the forest and the mountains, and have existed for over one hundred years by the time the book begins. The Guarders steal money, food and clothing from towns that border the forest. They also kill people.

Our story takes place in the town of Edge, which borders the forest, and is a very small, but independent town. After the monarchy is replaced by a Council, a decision is made to build a fort in Edge to battle the newly emerging Guarders threat.

Captain Shin, son of General Shin - head of the army, is sent to head up the effort at the fort. He meets a very independent and outspoken school teacher named Ms. Peto, and it is her recollections as the most dangerous woman in the world, that this story is told.

There is action, adventure, skullduggery, betrayal, treason and a plot that just keeps twisting and turning. Even at the end there is much that isn't revealed, which is why I give it 4.5 stars instead of 5.

The characters are wonderful and their foibles are so human you just have to chuckle. Mrs. Peto is a kick in the pants, writing to the General about wanting to redecorate the fort in manly plaid and new window coverings, along with throw pillows. Joriana Shin is fantastic with her lists for her son about his wife. What a great Mom. General Shin and his weather forecasts are priceless. The Densals are a warm and wonderful couple. The younger Shins are the sweetest, but most real romantic pair I've read about in a while. They are a joy to read about.

I would highly recommend this series to people that like a good fantasy with an intelligent story. You must pay attention or you will get lost on who is doing what to whom. When you do pay attention, you are awarded with a rich layered tapestry of betrayal, treason and infamy. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. 4.5 / 5 stars

I enjoy checking out new authors' work and was attracted to this series due to the great reviews and the fact that three out of the five books were free at the time. That prompted me to buy the other two for a couple dollars each as I figured it was great opportunity to take a chance on a series I was unfamiliar with.

I was truly amazed at the character development. I felt I knew every character. The author illustrated everything--suspense, excitement, happiness, sadness--running the gamut of emotions that really made me feel them. Reading all five books in order really painted a more complete, in-depth picture. I'm so glad I got all five at once because once I was finished with one book, I couldn't wait to move on to the next. I fell in love with the family, their extended family, and the utopian lifestyle. If only we still lived like that. I wanted to leave my life, as great as it is, and jump into that utopia.

I can't wait until book 6 is finished. At this point I'd likely pay just about anything for it, they are truly that good!

I have mixed feelings about this book. Some of the plot holes will probably be filled in with future books in the series, which I am unlikely to purchase. The writing is first-rate. The pacing is excellent; the best part is the interesting and intelligent characters. The dialog is snappy and smart; it keeps your interest throughout. That said, I don't understand the plot; I don't know if it is a "Christian Novel", though I suspect it may be. I also don't know if it is supposed to take place in the future of mankind , or in our feudal, possibly renaissance, past. Or it may take place in a parallel universe, altogether. I do know that there are vast amounts of symbolism, that I don't get. It is similar to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, with human beings instead of other unwordly creatures that may or may not join the humans in future novels. There is a power struggle for the future of mankind . Some vague puppet masters are manipulating circumstances, for the purpose of observing mankind's reactions and testing hypothesis. My best guess as to the purpose of the various settlements is that they will turn out to be a microcosm of mankind's cultural differences and norms, being part of a giant experiment being conducted by a higher being, which will eventually determine man's "fitness" to continue populating the earth. To not understand the plot after a fairly lengthy book is not very satisfying. If you choose this book, just know that you are in for a many-book saga, if you are to "get it." I am convinced that the writer has a plan, going forward, (the writing is too good and tight for there not to be one (I hope). What this book is about, will require a commitment, I just don't think I'm quite ready to make. How's that for an ambivalent review? Ambivalent is exactly how I feel about this book

A very imaginative and well written book. I quite enjoyed the mix of drama and humor spiked with a logic puzzle which I am still puzzling through in my mind. Thank you for a fascinating few days of reading.

The author has come up with an interesting setting. A world that isn't progressing and a bit fed up with the ruling class. But come the revolution does it necessarily bring change? At first I found the pace slow, however this was a good thing as the reader learns about the central characters and the many plots are weaved. Intrigue abounds as the reader ponders who are the actual good guys? Very well written, the suspense builds and the characters are very interesting. Bring on the next book!
