Liberation Day: A Suspense Thriller Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 925 ratings

In occupied Germany in 1942, the young son of a Russian diplomat is picked up by the SS police, never to be seen again.

In present day Washington, D.C., an employee stands before the controlling board of his company and makes a pitch that will either make or end his career. In Boston Harbor, shipments of high-end automobiles bound for Italy and containers of refugees inbound from Cuba continue to go missing.

At the center of everything stands Thorn Byrd, a recent college graduate just twenty-two years old. Plucked away from the life he had planned and thrust into one he never knew existed, he is forced to decipher who is behind the sinister plot unfolding around him and the global implications it holds.

Aiding in his journey are the combined forces of the Cuban and Irish cartels, both of which have lost a great deal of face and are seeking revenge, along with a brother/sister pair desperate to find a lost family member. Opposing them are a conglomerate with ties reaching back to the Second World War and bent on righting wrongs seventy years in the making.

Armed only with his instincts and the help of those around him, Thorn must determine who to trust and what to do before it is too late.

Considering Simmons has emerged as one of my favorite writers of the last few years, I was in a hurry to recharge my batteries with another of his titles. I came away from the last one feeling fully energized and fit to tackle my own life dramas with a similar dose of heroism and hardiness. But after taking some licks, I was due for another tune up.

This is my second book by the author, and though I wouldn’t have thought it possible, it’s even better than the last. He presents us with a hero in Thorn that is every bit the match for the hero of the Jack Reacher novels. Thorn being a bit younger, however, he’s likely to be as much of a sensation with the YA crowd as with older readers. The sheer thrill and adrenaline rush that comes from following in Thorn’s wake through one dangerous situation after another is one of the engines driving this story. The other engine motoring us forward is the puzzle-piece like plotting. We’re presented by a number of story threads in act one that we can tell are connected in some way; we just don’t know how they’re connected exactly. As the puzzle pieces start to slip into place, not only is the picture which begins to emerge particularly troubling, but even more questions are raised. This is a classical form of narrative construction, of course, but seldom is it this well employed.

One story thread begins as far back as World War II. Another story thread involves a talented young man, not too long out of the military, with rather unique skill sets, who, despite just as successful of a career in football, and some equally enticing business prospects that promise no less of a privileged future, feels adrift. Ever since leaving the military something has been missing in his life. It’s only when he’s approached by a nebulous consortium of business and political interests known simply as The Company that he gets a chance to address the restlessness in his nature, and feel the adrenaline rush that’s been missing since his military days, the sense of purpose, and of serving a higher cause.

It is here that the story, already in high gear, picks up additional momentum. Centering on a mystery unfolding on the Boston docks, where strange things are happening with shipping containers and dock workers getting killed in the middle of the night, it isn’t long before our young hero’s talents are put to the test. It will take more than well-honed military reflexes and skills to see him through. He’ll need no shortage of strategic genius of his own to put him on a par with the master plotter and schemer who will be his nemesis throughout the story, who’s been planning his revenge since World War II. Thorn, hence, has a lot of catching up to do. And the pressure is on considering the stakes couldn’t be higher; millions of lives are at stake.

As you can probably tell from my review, the author is well aware of the formulas and tropes of the genre and employs them to excellent effect. Having read my share of pulse-bounding thrillers (it’s one of my favorite genres), I speak with some authority when I say that this is one of the better ones I’ve encountered. Highly recommended.

I found the book quite enjoyable and quick paced. As someone who was born in Cambridge Mass and raised in the Boston are ,where I still work,I really enjoyed the setting and am familiar with many of the locations in the book. I also work in the maritime industries so the waterfront settings really piqued my interest and I could picture myself right down there on the waterfront by the Back Falcon terminal. Overall it was a fun and thrilling ride reading this book and I look forward to reading the next installment of Thorn's adventures , hoping there is more? Great job Mr. Stevens!

Liberation Day really kept my interest. I enjoyed the plot twists and thought it was a great start for a new series of books featuring Byrd and Ingram. However. The editing was sorely lacking; there were far too many spelling and grammatical errors that I personally found distracting at times. One example: the plural of Garcia is Garcias, not Garcia's and it appeared incorrectly numerous times. The really egregious error was the use of the word envoy. The sentence was: "Like sprinters at the sound of the gun the entire envoy....". By definition, an envoy is a messenger or representative, usually on a diplomatic mission. I'm not sure what word the author meant to use - convoy wouldn't have been correct either as that involves vehicles. Again, I truly enjoyed the book. I found the plot gripping and exciting and would definitely recommend the book. I simply hope the author will find a good editor for future endeavors.

Liked the story line and non stop action. One section seemed to have more than the usual grammar and wrong words most likely due to auto correct. Tough guy but mostly believeable.

The hero in this book is very real and a true hero, as worthy of respect and love as the villain is worthy of pity and fear. Well written, terrific character development, exciting, fast moving plot and just ending. The author keeps you on the edge of your chair. He also leaves you feeling that although at times there were sad outcomes, that justice was done in big and small ways. This is the first book by Dustin Stevens that I have read, but it won't be the last! Thank you Mr. Stevens, keep them coming.

Stevens has scenery writing style which makes him easy to read. The characters are developed nicely. The protagonist character has legs and a series is well deserved. The premise of the story was well thought out but the manor in which the antagonist was to seek revenge seemed a bit of a stretch for my taste. That being said, I still enjoyed thr book thoroughly. Well done Mr Stevens...

I usually get the gist of one of Dustin's books prey well but the first several chapters jumping around didn't seem to fit, not that I was doubting Mr Stevens' method of writing. I should have known better. When everything came together later on I had my (slap on forehead) "duh" moment. The writing, as usual-excellent. The story, thrilling and also so sad. This story shows that hatred carried to the extreme is a definite health hazard. Fast paced, interesting, developed characters, complex plot and just enough humor to seem like it could really BE happening in my family room as I watched. Kudos on another great story, Dustin.

This is my first reading by this author and I found his development of the characters and story line will thought out and executed. The story kept my interest and had me reading till I had to stop and rest my eyes. Any thriller enthusiast would enjoy this book. The one negative thing I have is that at times words were repeated in such a way as to have me reread and figure out the meaning, some miss-spelled words were also present. This could have happened when transitioning from a written form to an electronic form. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Mr Stevens does a superb job of presenting characters who don't always do the obvious, nor does Mr Stevens do the obvious in his words... Simple presentation yet enough information to provide a complex tale... Well done..!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed and will be seeking more of this author's writings

I enjoy a fast paced novel and this certainly qualifies. I found the characters reasonably well drawn, with enough back story for you to empathise with the hero without being bogged down in trivia. The storyline itself was well structured and well written and, as mentioned, fast paced with all threads being drawn together for the final 'reveal'. I will be searching for more of Mr Stevens books now.

I found this story to very confusing. Not up to the author's high standard but, still worth 3 stars.
