Joss the Seven (Guild of Sevens Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 141 ratings

New powers. Big problems.
Joss Morgan loves joking around, but it’s no joke when he discovers he has superpowers. Those powers could get him killed.

Heroes and villains want Joss to join them. Both will use him. Everyone has secrets. And his life isn’t the only one on the line. If Joss can’t figure out who to trust, his whole family could die.

"Soundly crafted and well-paced, this is a story that'll keep you turning pages late into the night."
Marc Secchia (best-selling MG/YA fantasy author)

Fourteen-year-old Joss Morgan loves a good prank, but the joke’s on him when he discovers he has superpowers. He quickly learns that with the new powers comes real danger. The Mockers are coming for Joss, and he doesn’t know why, or even who they really are. He only knows they mean trouble; deadly trouble.

The Guild of Sevens, a secret organization of people with powers like Joss's, sends Mara to train Joss in his new power. She uses him to fight back against the Mockers, but nothing adds up, and pretty soon Joss is wondering which side he’s really working for.

When the Mockers arrive at his home, Joss is out of time. He sets up a high-stakes prank to save his family. This time he knows that if he fails, he won’t end up in the principal’s office; he’ll wind up dead.

J. Philip Horne probably shouldn't be alive. Born in Florida, he grew up overseas for the most part, spending much of his childhood in Liberia and Micronesia. During those years, he experienced numerous attempts on his life. The wannabe killers included malaria, spinal meningitis, blood poisoning, a staph infection in his heel bone, a close encounter with a green mamba, and other cold-hearted foes.

From his earliest years, his parents read to him fantastical stories from wonderful worlds. Narnia and Middle Earth featured prominently, and had his youth been a generation later, he would have certainly encountered Hogwarts at a young age. Through his teen years he read stories by many other authors and experienced a host of new worlds.

After dabbling in writing for many years, he finally got serious and wrote his first novel in 2011. He has continued to write ever since. For news of upcoming works, please join Mr. Horne’s email list at jphiliphorne.com.

My daughter, who is almost 12, and I both really enjoyed this book. I thought the plot was very creative; the superpowers that the author conceived of were unusual and very cool, and I liked how Joss had to train in order to learn to use them. The author did a great job writing in the voice of a middle school boy. There were a lot of positive relationships in the book, both in how Joss related to his family and his friends, and a nice subplot about how Joss learned that bullies at school sometimes have hidden hurts of their own. The plot was sufficiently complicated that the reader can't quite figure out who the good and bad guys are until the story progresses, and even as the book finishes, there is still a lot of room for development in understanding the larger context of the "Guild" (others who share Joss' type of powers) and the "Mockers" (apparently, the bad guys). Also, Joss has only worked to develop some of his powers by the end of this first book (though he has seven distinct powers)--it would definitely make a good series so I hope the author writes more!

My daughter says: "It was a very creative book and he could easily turn it into a series. It was cool how Joss had powers, and that they weren't indefinite but he had to rest to get his energy back--this made him different from other superheroes."

Great book and we definitely recommend it!

Quick summary:
Joss the Seven opens on Joss’s last day of eighth grade, just as he’s trying valiantly to make a name for himself as one of the greatest pranksters to ever grace the middle school hallways. Everything goes awry. To make matters worse, a note bearing the strangest instructions appears in his locker. Is someone playing a joke on him? When Joss tries the first test and his hand passes through a solid object, he’s thrust him into a world he can’t make heads or tails of. A world in which the good guys and the bad guys are both trying to recruit him, and he can’t sort out which is which.

My take:
This is a fast-moving tale with plenty of adventure, close calls, twists, fantastic superpowers, and plain old growing up troubles that are amplified by all the above. But Joss, with the support of his close-knit family and a loyal circle of friends, is up to the challenge. Though the story isn’t religious at all, it is refreshing to see his family's faith referenced in a casual, positive way. The story is rife with messages about friendship, family, forgiveness, loyalty, right and wrong, and helping strangers. But most importantly, it’s just plain fun. I mean, what kid wouldn’t want to turn invisible, walk through walls, and shift into a gigantic eagle? I can’t wait to read the next one.

The story was nice. Had action, excitement. decent characters. The story of a regular kid dealing with special powers and being pulled in different directions.
Who to trust? Plan to read next book. .

I was happy enough with the first chapter to toss it to my 7th-grade son. That was just before dinner tonight. He brought the book to the dinner table, which is normally not allowed, but when he prayed, "Thank you God for the beauty of literature" I figured I should let it slide this once. By bedtime he was on chapter 9. He says, "It's interesting. It's a real page-turner. It really keeps your attention" and until I get the book back, that's all I'll know. But I suppose it's enough.
I was happy to see that we're just in time for book 2 of the series. Also happy to see that it's printed. It's nice to see him holding a book instead of a screen. I may post a picture later ... it really is a happy sight to see a young man reading a good book.
______
ADDED: I read this myself (my son is almost done and still enjoying). It is high Texas adventure complete with 2 overstayed visas, 1 undersized bicycle, and 6 logo T-shirts. More seriously, it's a fun book. The tone is steady and light. The action rises and falls, but doesn't build with the depth a really great action/suspense novel should. But for a teen audience, I'm very happy with it. 0 vampires. 0 gag-worthy teen romances. Nothing I wouldn't want my kids reading, and good steady fun. Also some moral depth. A+. On to book 2.

I started reading it to see if it's ok for my 9-year-old son; I finished in one day because I was riveted. The first chapter was pretty good, but it gets even better: the story builds in action/suspense, and soon I couldn't put it down. Dialogue, pacing, plot -- all are spot-on. Even once I thought I knew where things were going, there were plenty of surprises left.

But it's not just a fast-paced, imaginative, exciting story. Joss struggles with forgiveness, in a touching subplot. Having supernatural gifts is a challenge even though it's good (I see parallels to giftedness here). I loved how the author raises ethical issues (is it ok to do wrong to achieve a good result? what does it mean to be a man?) without being preachy or slowing down the pace of the story. There is a lot to this book to mull over. I look forward to my son reading it and to discussing it with him.

I am a picky reader. I loved Joss the Seven and can't wait for the sequel!

Wow! I really loved this book! Call it urban fantasy or maybe magical realism, but either way it's got all kinds of cool "superpowers", action, spy-like stuff, and martial arts. Horne has created gripping, realistic characters with true-to-life reactions about the crazy things that happen, good and bad. The writing is sharp and vivid without weighing anything down in details. I really, really hope this ends up being a series because I could totally hang out in this world of sevens, and I want to meet Joss. One of the best fantasy books I've read in the last few years!

UPDATE: I just got the audible version of this book. Oh my gosh, it's fantastic! The narrator does voices that are just perfect for the story. I listened at 1.25 speed just because I like things quick, and it kept the pace just right. SO AWESOMESAUCE!

Delightful book, full of funny moments and lovely characters. Joss discovers he has some awesome superpowers but his life doesn’t get any easier despite the fact that he can turn himself indivisible and his body is bullet proof. Bad guys chase him… or maybe are they the good guys?
Great book for all ages. Totally recommend it.
