A career woman haunted by her father’s derision. A hurting child who misses his parents. A choice that can heal them both.

Attorney Audrey Beach is about to overcome the memory of her father’s contempt, once and for all. Making partner is right around the corner—plus, she has an interview with California’s biggest personal injury outfit. Meanwhile, she anticipates holding the arrogant Dr. Taylor accountable for the mistake that almost killed a friend’s daughter.

But when her brother goes to prison and she becomes guardian of his children, the validation she craves may elude her. Kids, it turns out, are a lot of work.

She hires a nanny to keep her career on life-support. It almost works—until the nanny calls during Dr. Taylor’s deposition. Audrey’s nephew won’t get up for school. Recognizing the boy’s symptoms from Dr. Taylor’s comments, Audrey rushes her nephew to the hospital. There, his devastating diagnosis forces her to choose between career-fueled validation and love.

Columba Booth has loved fiction since she saw her first book. She has a passion for the healing of families and the restoration of biblical values to American culture. As a single mom, she wrote Single Mom Faith (retired), a popular blog for single moms, as well as numerous posts and articles for Christian women’s publications.

Now, she writes fiction—her lifelong dream. The flawed characters in her stories struggle with current issues that clobber families and destroy lives. Often, these characters’ choices make things worse. Will their faith overcome it all?

Columba is happily married to Paul, who laughs at her jokes and enables her book addiction.

So wonderful to read, good, clean fiction! The story line it’s so real and things like this happens so often In real families. I loved the outcome. Thank you for writing a book worth reading.

A great read for thinking about what you might do in unexpected and high pressure circumstances. What might you do if suddenly abandoned by a spouse and badly in need of money? What if you are just about to reach the career milestone, but your family has an emergency? What do you do if that lawyer who is suing you is ...a great person. Admirable. Also pretty cute. Hmmmm?
A fun read with ups and downs and unexpected twists along the way.

Booth has written a compelling story that shows her passion for the healing of families, as well as for informed and helpful medical care, especially for persons with Type 1 Diabetes.

Single, career-woman Audrey is about to make partner at her law firm when her brother, whose wife walked out on the family 16 months earlier, gets arrested and incarcerated. There is no one else to care for his three children. When the firm presses Audrey to return to the long hours and pressured workload she had, she realizes family must be first, and commits to caring for the children.

Booth's characters are well drawn, realistic. Her plotting is excellent and I found it hard to put the book down once I got into it. She weaves multiple lives together with passion and creativity. Tension is high when you include a mother who has abandoned her family, a father in jail, a kidnapping, an abusive doctor, and romance with the last person Audrey would have expected. I recommend her book.

Only reason I gave it 4.5 stars rather than 5 is that it took me just a little while to get into the story. Once I did, I was hooked.

Columba develops her characters in a profound way that feels as if we know them personally, or at least someone with similar traits. We can recognize our own selfishness and vanity in observing Nancy; our burdensome baggage from the past in Eric, and our longing to be wanted and needed in Audrey. We see prayer at work in these lives and how the characters discover God’s sovereign care for them in redeeming the deep valleys of each person’s journey of faith. This book is very enjoyable throughout.

Columba Booths ability to weave emotion, humor, spirituality and love, as she builds her characters, is beautiful and compelling. I, as a reader, will put a book aside if it doesn’t grab me. This book I had a hard time putting down. Could wait to find out what happensed next! Having lived in the Santa Cruz area, I enjoyed how Booth choose different hot spots in the county to incorporate into her narrative.
When Columba Booths next book comes out, I’ll find it!!

I give tough reviews. I reserve 5 stars for books that make me say, "Wow, that is one of the best books I've ever read." 4 stars is for books that grip me, keep me, and leave me satisfied.

While this book is well-written, it did not pull me in. I had to work to keep reading. Audrey in her law world did not interest me. She seemed all in her head, cold and calculating. When she let go of that ambition to care for her nephews and niece and I met her heart, my interest grew.

My effort to keep reading paid off. Unexpected twists in the second half of the book engaged me.

The peek into dealing with Type 1 diabetes was informative, and the additional level of the doctor being diabetic himself and going into the caring profession after losing a sibling was complex and multilayered.

I did think resolutions came too quickly and easily at the end. It all seemed too tied up in a pretty bow to be realistic. I would have been more satisfied being left with hope that the loose ends would tie up eventually...

I liked this book because it is written about a woman with a career, and a story that really makes you feel how hard the decision was to give it up. It is a book that has a lot of plot twists along the way; one of those you must finish instead of doing ordinary things like cooking meals! Send for take out and read!!

Flawed characters—much like people you know and see in the mirror—make mistakes but find redemption when they own their mistakes and seek Jesus. Some of the scenes could be pared down, but I found myself rooting for the characters. If you’re looking for hope in a dark world, this book is for you.
