This is a beautiful story!

This is a beautiful story!
This book is beautifully written. I literally read it in two days because I couldn't put it down. I had to find out what the next chapter held and now I can't wait until the second book comes out so I can continue on this journey with Etania. The power of God's love and redemption is real and that is what this book so excellently conveys.

I enjoyed this clean Christian fantasy romance very much! It had great world building, plenty of twists in the plot and surprises throughout the story. At first the main character was a whiny, slightly spoiled girl with not much confidence in herself or others, but she grew throughout the book into a strong capable young woman who was learning to lead others and to trust in God. The story ended with a happy ending so far, and with a peek at some dawning conflict in the next book in this series.

Upon reading it, I wish I had read it sooner. This was a story I did not realize I needed in my life until I opened the book. Elrich magically captures what is means to grow up in both a literal and spiritual sense. Her detailed characters and peoples create a fascinating world, and her plot draws you in making you eager to discover what will happen next.

Etania Selali has a strained relationship with her father who often puts hunting Skazic over his family. Because of this, Etania chooses to become her mother's apprentice at the library rather than train under her father. However, after a surprise attack by a Skazic, Etania and her family discover she is a Vexli -- she has the Neuma (a unique power given by God) to change Skazic back to their human selves (before they were corrupted by Malstorm). Etania struggles accepting her father's desire to use her as a weapon against the Skazic, but more than that she struggles to accept herself and the fact that Melchizedek (son of God) loves her and has a plan for her life. As Etania travels with her father and his apprentice gathering support for a coming war after a great betrayal, she journeys to places of self-discovery, self-acceptance, love, and God's grace.

Within the world of Tamnarae, there are many groups of people with specific Neuma. For instance, the Leici have healing Neuma while the Eritam can tame wolves. Similarly the Draconians can control dragons. The Naymatua can grow plants, the Ningyo can control water, and the Kinzoku can manipulate metal.

One of my favorite quotes from the book reads, "He loved her even when she couldn't love herself." I think this line perfectly captures what true love looks like, and the unwavering love God has for us. As Etania discovers the love of God, we are reminded of it again and again. Elrich's writing is a beautiful reminder that God is the source of all love and that our relationship with him should always remain a priority.

I highly recommend Etania's Worth to lovers of YA fantasy and Christian fiction.

In this YA Christian Fantasy novel, Etania, of Tamnarae, is not sure she believes Mechizedek loves her or that she has any value. Her parents follow Melchizedek - in fact, her father, Jakin, is a Lherling, one of the original twelve followers who served as Melchizedek's peacemakers during the Long War. When Etania is attacked by a Soacronis, a type of Skazic - fallen humans who have sold their souls to Malstorm (a representation of Satan) - a bright light emanates from her fingers, a power known as Neuma, rendering her attacker unconscious before she loses consciousness herself. Etania cannot clearly remember the incident and flatly refuses to believe that she actually has Neuma or that she is special in any way. She is angry with her father for only starting to pay attention to her now that she is suspected of having Neuma. He wants her to be his apprentice in hunting the Skazic. Etania would rather avoid her father, so she has chosen to be her librarian mother's apprentice. Shortly thereafter, she is visited by Melchizedek in a dream vision and told she must use her Neuma to save Tamnarae from evil. Will Etania learn to overcome the hurts of her past, to trust God (called Deo in the novel), to follow God's will instead of her own, to believe God has a plan for her and that she is loved and does have value? Will she accept the responsibility of being a Vexli?
The world building is intricate and quite well done in this novel and I love the representations the author uses to portray spiritual battles and to teach Biblical truths!

I think a younger audience (tweens and young teens) might really enjoy this story. There’s adventure and magic and exciting battles too.

The reason I’m only giving it 3 stars is that the characters seemed a bit two-dimensional to me and most didn’t feel real to me. Here’s an example of what I mean by unrealistic character behavior: there were several instances of winking. I can handle one character in a story winking once or twice if it doesn’t distract (or even more than that if it’s true to the character’s personality and behavior patterns), but to have several characters wink for various reasons throughout the story ended up annoying me a bit. One of Jakin’s winks, in particular, seemed too flirtatious to me. It wasn’t appropriate timing for a wink and actually seemed out of character for him to be flirting like that. If he was flirting? I’m still not quite sure. That scene just felt weird.

Overall, Etania’s Worth is a good story. I especially loved how the author’s Christian worldview was very evident throughout the story (it is Christian fantasy fiction, after all)!

I wouldn’t have any problem allowing a tween or young teen read this book if they wanted to read it.
