Rock Hard Gargoyle: A Paranormal Monster Romance (Possessive Monsters) Paperback – January 7, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
After a break-in at my apartment, I get my very own security detail. Cool right? Wrong. The big, brooding beast assigned to protect me 24/7 is the very same cocky guard who caught me crashing a dragon’s wedding!
Grayson, the owner of Redrock Protective Services, is massive, powerful, and totally intimidating. Arrogant, too. Did I mention his slow, sultry smile or the wickedly possessive glint in his steel-gray eyes? Something inhuman flickers there, and I realize, too late, that I’ve caught the attention of a monster.
He vows to protect me from danger. His solution? Steal me away to his gorgeous penthouse high above the city. I should run before I do something stupid, like fall for the growly gargoyle. But I can’t. Evil lurks in the shadows waiting for me.
Now, the only thing that will save me is my very own possessive monster.
Rock Hard Gargoyle is a paranormal romance with hunky gargoyles, suave demons, and evil wizards. Sweet & steamy, with a side of sneaky tail. HEA guaranteed.

Shelby and Grayson
The first meeting between Shelby and Grayson didn’t start out well, but the gargoyle knew that the woman he met was special. When Shelby finds herself in need of some protection, Grayson is more than ready to provide it!
Shelby is a dress designer and seamstress who specialises in women with unique fit issues (she’s short and curvy herself, so understands their problems). She’s been struggling for a while, but recently had a custom dress demand that gave her some much needed good PR. (Fireproof dress for a dragon wedding? I’d love to know more about dragon and his mate!). She’s strong, independent (to a fault), and brave.
Grayson is a gargoyle and bodyguard/protector. He and his brothers started a security business- and are uniquely suited to it. He’s massive, shy about his natural form, and very protective!
The story is the author’s debut book, and it is a great beginning. The story is primarily romance driven, but there is enough action to keep you intrigued, and the pacing of the story is well done too.
Told in dual POV, we get to hear from both Grayson and Shelby, meet a few other interesting characters, and learn a little about this new world.
An engaging read that promises to be part of an interesting new series, with likable, imperfect characters and a fascinating new world.
Recommended for paranormal romance lovers.
This was okay. Definitely could be improved. There were a lot of times I just didn't care what was going on. It did feel as if the author was showing more than telling but it wasn't done correctly. There was still telling but it didn't feel like that was the issue. There were moments that I liked both the h and the H and times where they annoyed the crap out of me. I also went back and forth on if I bought them as couple or not. I'm still going to read book 2, I enjoyed the world that was set up.
The h caught her ex, or found out that he was, cheating on her and so kicked him out of the apartment. He then, with a bunch of his friends, put bad reviews of her company on every website they could find. It's been a little over a year but she never mentions trying to do anything to get rid of them or counter them.
Everything with the ex boyfriend could've been cut from the story. He doesn't impact the story in any way.
The h can be annoying sometimes. The H fumbled saying something and when he tried to explain how he didn't mean it like it sounded she refused to believe him. Thankfully the H's brothers' mate (who is a human female) talked some sense into her. But I don't like how the H now thinks he keeps saying the wrong thing. He's only thinking of two instances, this one and when they first met. And to me, when they first met, he was doing his job as well as flirt, but it wasn't working because in order to do his job he had to prevent the h from doing hers, but he didn't know that at the time. This all felt contrived and it shouldn't feel that way.
Not sure why the H didn't actually explain the more dangerous parts of the mission when he specifically thinks it. And even without knowing the H feels the h is his mate, no one gives one iota that he cares about her and if the plan goes sour (using her as bait), and she died, it would affect him.
Kind of curious how wizards are allowed to bind other monsters and beings still. Not exactly sure how it works but the wizards basically use magic and can force demons and gargoyles (and possibly others) to do whatever they tell them to. They're mostly used for protection and muscle, but they would have to do *anything* they're told to do. It's odd that it's still allowed to happen. The monsters have their own law enforcement, they had this before they were revealed to the humans.
The h's age isn't given, I'm guessing mid to late 20s. The H is centuries old.
The h isn't a virgin, her last was her ex, not sure when though, they broke up a little over a year prior. The H isn't a virgin, his past is a little confusing. At first he says women were a simple conquest and nothing more. But I'm not sure how it could be considered a conquest as it's also stated all of these women wanted to be with him because he was a novelty. Later it turns into it was with only 'a few witches' and they used each other. No BC, or discussion.
Spice is 3 fires out of 5 fires. Light spanking, double pen, tail as a D.
No sexual assault.
Epilogue, no time frame given, maybe a month later?
There was one "in-depth" smash scene, and the rest were pretty much a drive-by mention, which could be a downside for many but not for me who has read around a thousand or more romances.
Sometimes the smash scenes get lengthy and tedious with describing every pubic freckle and what it tastes like.
I enjoyed the storyline, it didn't skirt over the fine details but it didn't over play them either. It was concise but pleasant. Loved how the pissant got what he deserved.

All the characters and story lines kept me going till the end makes you want to read the rest
I enjoyed the simple world building; a world just as we live in but with supernatural/paranormal having been revealed to humanity four years prior when The Wall, a protective spell shielding their existence, fell for reasons unknown.
Shelby, a seamstress specializing in unique, custom clothing for unique bodies needs to gain entrance to the wedding of the year, between a dragon and his mate, to deliver a critical piece of the wedding outfit to the bride or her business will be ruined - I have to admit a more than passing interest in that pairing. Grayson, a gargoyle, and part-owner of Red Rock Protective Services, is providing security for the wedding and is tasked with keeping anyone not on the guest list out stands in her way. They butt heads, but eventually reach a détente when he finds her during the couple's first dance and offers her some delicious appetizers as an apology. He's knows she's special but she slips from his grasp before he can pursue anything.
Luckily, or unluckily, Shelby finds herself in need of a bodyguard, sooner rather than later, when her apartment is broken into by people who believe she has latent magical powers. This plot point and all the stuff about The Wizard's Elder Council, could have done with some fleshing out because it seemed like a bit of a leap from getting photographed with Grayson to being assumed to be a witch. Ultimately it felt like a clumsy devise to simply get them occupying the same space. I rolled with it because it was a small issue. The side-story with Shelby's ex-boyfriend was an unnecessary detraction and distraction from the main story.
Once Shelby moved into Grayson's penthouse apartment the romance backslid a little for me and the author fell into the trap of relying on a mate bond to tell the reader that the two main characters were perfect for each other rather than showing them - I loved seeing Grayson start to woo his mate, but that was abandoned all too soon, and not personalized nearly as much as I would have liked - flowers and chocolates are nice, but so generic. She's a seamstress; find a rare and magical fabric for her or vintage mannequin maybe, something to show you are paying attention to her personality and interests. This was especially important since she didn't feel the pull of the mate bond as clearly/strongly as he did. This line in particular made me cringe, "I do not need to ask you for a date. You are already mine, Shelby" and encapsulates why I have such a hard time with the fated mates trope. We're a week in and have slept together, like, once, slow your roll.
The spicy scenes were well done, advanced the plot nicely (creative use of the tail *wink*), and didn't detract from the rest of the story. This was a solid start to a new series by a new author. I am looking forward to reading Eamon's story.
