Lucifer's Daughter: A Reverse Harem Paranormal Romance (Damned Magic and Divine Fates: Queen of the Damned Book 1) Kindle Edition
So imagine my surprise when I find out everything I’ve ever been told, is a lie.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here.
Let’s start from the beginning. My name is Ruby Morningstar. I run a tattoo parlor in Portland with my banshee bestfriend, have a pet raccoon, a crazy ex that stalks me, not to mention this one little thing… I’m a demon. Half-succubus, to be exact.
For the last twenty-three years of my life, that’s the story I believed, but on the day a handsome stranger bails me out of jail my world is turned upside down, and suddenly I don’t know who I am anymore.
Because the Four Horsemen aren’t the bringers of the apocalypse.
I am.
Talk about never catching a break.

I really enjoyed the strength of FMC. The storyline was fast-paced, but still had enough character development and world building to follow along easily. I've already borrowed the next in series and I'm excited to dive back in.
I feel as if this book was made for specifically me and my taste. I immediately bought the rest of the books in the series when I finished this book. I also feel that given the title, if you chose to read this book, it will be right up your alley as well.
The female characters are strong independent women. The strength and will power she gave the main character, and the foundation of it, could not be more impressed. Although everything in me wishes this book was more smutty, It would have ruined the main character's morals, taking away what I loved so much about her. The tension she built between the characters. The morals she placed amongst all of them, although they were all demons. Mmm! I can’t even put into words how much I loved that.
I am a sucker for a biblical reference with a twist. I am a theologian so l am a nerd for religion base theories. Accurate depiction with an unconventional, theoretical conspiracy of the story. I eat that up. I love what the author conspired. A tale that might not be so far fetched. It wasn't a far left-field conspiracy that sounded completely made up. Just a new outlook or possibility to the centuries old biblical tale.
The storyline was well written. There aren't missing bits or parts that drag on just to fill the pages.
Book reviews from me only get 5 stars if it knocks out my current number one read.
Only regret/dislike I have about this book is I read it so fast.
In my extensive reading experience, this was one plot line I had not thought about. Lucifer Morningstar’s secret daughter hiding on the mortal plane in plain sight, an orphan of a half-demon orphanage. (That’s another first in my book! Dammit, Carpenter! I’m glad I met you and your books!) And the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are not meant to destroy us measly Humans but to protect her from… well, we don’t know yet, but when someone/something kills Big Daddy, the Immortal Four now have a big job on their hands… and that might be not just those who would want to destroy Ruby but Ruby herself.
Obviously, this is Book One of a series, but it is a good introduction to our main cast of characters, including a Bean Sidhe (you’d know ‘em as banshees) and a raccoon. Obviously, this is series will be a reverse harem of sorts with hints of Anita Blake rummaging around, but despite its supernatural origins, it’s a far more realistic read than the contemporary reverse harem romance novellas I’ve read lately which are pathetically anemic and way too happy happy joy joy for me. More than one unit of testosterone in any given room just does not operate that way.
Length: Short novel.
Character development: Carpenter makes it easy to start getting under the skin (or is it the reverse?) of the Four Horsemen, and each actually has a name rather than what we mortals have given them. And they are hardly static characters but are being developed deliberately slower than what we see of Ruby. Now Ruby is definitely a handful with her own demons (pardonnez la blague) inside her, and now she has to do a lot more growing up than her just hitting the Big 2-3 (in Human years, of course). Instead of thinking she’s a half-succubus dumped off at the orphanage by her uncaring mother, she is the legendary daughter of Satan Himself, the Lord of Nightmares and such but one who supposedly could not begat a single child. Lots of heavy mysteries to solve, but not necessarily in one novel. But that’s fine with me. Carpenter doesn’t leave you out on a limb.
Emotional factor: I think I was hooked within two pages with the character of Ruby. As for which Horseman makes me hot, it’s a toss-up between Laran (War) or Julian (Death). Or I just might be greedy and take all four of them. (You have to read the book to understand what I’m talking about.) And somehow, I think the tables are going to turn when the Four Horsemen figure out that it will take everything in their power to control Ruby as she transitions into the Queen of Hell… as well as protect themselves from her rather than the other way around.
Speed of action: Gallops along well without feeling rushed or slow. Suspenseful! Lots of lustful tension. This is my favorite emotional umami!
Predictability: You can’t predict the supernatural. ‘Nuff said.
Credibility issues: Nothing jumped out and grabbed me, breaking my suspension of disbelief… I think I’m going back and rereading this one again.
Grammar and technical errors: None that I can tell.
Augh! Now I’m über-pissed because I’ll have to wait for Book Two to come out!! Don’t rush it, Carpenter, because I hate rush jobs, but don’t take your time, either!

Ruby is a half human half succubus tattoo artist with a bit of a temper, a fiercely protective banshee best friend, and the cutest raccoon ever. Ruby is a well rounded character, she’s not whiney, she doesn’t spend pages antagonising over things; she gets stuff done and then deals with it later. For me, Ruby is what a true strong female character should be; she is independent and capable of taking control of her own life but is not afraid to lean on her friends for support and shows emotions that move past just butt kicking - which too many authors seem to think is the main quality of a strong female character. I love how Ruby’s best friend, Moira, is such a prevalent character throughout the whole book, she doesn’t just disappear once the Four Horsemen turn up. And the Four Horsemen? Let’s just say that I like what I see... I mean read.. and I like how Carpenter kept their snippets of POV’s to just that, snippets - short and sweet does the trick.
Carpenter has created a riveting read, and while stories of the Four Horsemen are not unusual, this is still an original story with a captivating plot. Lucifer’s Daughter is a slow to medium burn RH with only heavy petting above and below the waist. There is no cliffhanger to be exact but it definitely paves the way for book two, but I should warn you that there is a trigger warning needed for this one.
I cannot wait to read more of the world of Ruby and the Four Horsemen that Carpenter has created, and of course I look forward to reading more about Bandit the raccoon (so cute). Lucifer’s Daughter not only gets five stars from me but it’s gone straight in with my favourites.
Lucifer’s Daughter is the first book in a (completed) series and having read others of Kel’s books I obviously compared them. Now, the main character Ruby is not as bada** as Piper or Fury (MCs from Touched by Fire and Dark Horse). Ruby is a little more laid back, in some cases even a little hesitant - especially when it comes to her sexuality - but this makes sense, because some things happened in her past that… let’s say tainted her experience. So, I can absolutely understand her being a little careful here and there. While I love the no bull**** attitudes of Piper and Fury though, I would definitely NOT say Ruby is weak. Ruby is strong in her own sense, because Ruby knows how to keep herself in check. Ruby can be very collected (focus on *can*, because she IS a demon and she DID put a car on fire in the very beginning which I just celebrated so hard. 🤣🤣🤣) and Ruby can also have a big mouth.
In many aspects I feel like this very short first book in the series was literally only the introduction. I think sh** will go down in the next books, especially, because things happened that really lay the groundwork for some big fun in the sequel.
Obviously I would have loved MORE, I wanted more scenes with the guys, I wanted more Bandit and I wanted more Moira. I love all these characters. And I am in love with Kel’s writing style so obviously I wanted more.😂
However, by now I am pretty sure that Kel will give me more and all that I want in the next books in the #QueenOfTheDamned series, meaning I am going to continue with the sequel ASAP.
So, to sum this up Lucifer’s Daughter is a series start that makes you curious about the characters and to see where the story will go and it will absolutely make you want more. It has great main and side characters and it has an adorable racoon companion that I hope we will so more of.❤❤❤
There is a potential trigger involving attempted rape. That should have been mentioned in the blurb.
I can't say I thoroughly enjoyed it, because there were lots of occasions when I put the book down, some of the internal dialogue was superfluous and dragged the plotline down.
I didn't form a bond with any of the characters, none of them were truly in depth, no insights as to what formed their personality. Having a pet raccoon that does adorable stuff doesn't make me like the character any more than if she had a pet rat. There is way too much tell and not enough show. It's setting up the next book in the series, so there's no resolution to the plotline whatsoever which is irritating.
There is lots of swearing and very little in the way of sex scenes.
I don't think I will continue to purchase the series. Although it's a really good concept it wasn't realised in the book, it needed more fleshing out. The four Horsemen came across as quite weak characters too, for someone who is thousands of years old not to understand how the human world ticks isn't really plausible.
Kel Carpenter has created a collection of funny and engaging characters which makes this book stand out. Ruby and Moira, her BFF, have such a great girl bond and they support and uplift each other something often missing from RH novels. The Horsemen are all so unique, with their strengths and different approaches to 'dealing' with Ruby. Finally Bandit, my favourite character of all - just loved the way that so much character is put into that trash panda.
Lucifer's Daughter is fast paced, written mostly from Ruby's point of view but with the perspective of the Horsemen thrown in occasionally. Kel Carpenter jams a lot of action into a shorter novel at 222 pages and many questions remain unanswered for the reader. This doesn't necessarily take away from the story however makes them want to read the remaining books in the series to find out what happens next.
This way my second read of Lucifer's Daughter in 12 months, this time for BABE Book Club, and it was just as good as I remembered. Be warned you wont be able to stop at just one book so be prepared to read until you have finished the entire Queen of the Damned Series. I recommend this book for readers who like paranormal romance, reverse harem, slow burn, demons, urban fantasy and trash pandas.
