Do you believe in second chances?

Maybe you, too, flew high and fell hard. Maybe you, too, are longing for a fresh start and a clean slate. You’ve burned bridges, lost the family fortune, and tarnished your reputation. You are angry and bitter. What happened to the life you ordered?

In one of His most beloved parables, Jesus tells the story of a young man who left home, flew high, and fell hard. Sitting in a muddy hog pen far from home, hungry and miserable, he wonders what happened to his big dreams. The Prodigal—or Lost—Son wants to come home and start again, but he is not sure of his welcome.

Even as Christians, we sometimes stray from God’s path and get lost. We left the church for a variety of reasons, perhaps even vowing never to return. Yet now we are looking to start over, wipe the slate clean, and find our way home again. But we are not sure of our welcome.

PRODIGAL: Calling Lost Christians Home explores the classic journey of rebellion, redemption, and restoration. Told from three points of view—the author’s, the Prodigal’s, and God’s—the story begins with a Brady Bunch life of love and acceptance. We then strike out on our own with big dreams, only to have them explode in our faces. But in changing course, we discover that we can go home again. We can live in a world where all is forgiven, and prodigals are welcomed home with open arms and rejoicing.

“Prodigal: Calling Lost Christians Home” by Susan Bagato is a personal story about getting lost and finding a way home, a story from the bible (the Lost Son told by Jesus and found in Luke 15:11-32), and thoughts about God’s love. At the end of the book, Susan includes Discussion Questions that you will find useful. Susan explains the benefit of asking God. She says “Ask Him, seek Him. He will create a way in the desert, or a way through the ocean, clearing the way for you to run home to your Father’s waiting arms.” This book should inspire you.

This is a great book that demonstrates the author’s love for God, church, and family. Susan Bagato provided the reader with a great biographical writing that is interesting, humorous, and inspiring. It also shows her dedication of her love for God and the Christian faith. There are many prodigals out there who would benefit much from this wonderful encouraging book. It does a great job in illustrating God’s love for all, even those of us who show ourselves to be unloving. I highly recommend this wonder book.

The author is a very passionate writer, and her joy at writing this book is evident in its 134 pages (not including study guide questions for each chapter, and additional resources!). She also cites the Bible verses she gets a lot of her material from, which is helpful for looking up the inspiration if one so chooses and had a Bible handy. She puts a lot of love in every page, and that is what comes across the most: her great love for God, family, and others, which made for a very moving reading experience. Ms. Bagato wants you to get in there with her and feel what she is feeling, and to take to heart the lessons she is giving and sharing throughout. She is here to teach us all something about life, and it was a very emotional and satisfying to read. There is a lot of biographical material in the first section of the book, and here I would offer a slight criticism: the events and timelines are often jumping around, and sometimes very interesting stories had no ending or resolution, so I wanted it to be much longer. I found myself wanting to know more about some of the events she breathlessly related in tumults of prose. But then, it wouldn't be the pithy, succinct study of her journey into, away from, and back to the her church family that it ends up becoming. Ms. Bagato with no subterfuge or wasted time gets to the point, veering from autobiography, to a parable of the prodigal son, to God speaking in first person to the reader, and then back again for a few cycles, bringing all of the threads to logical conclusions. Anyone reading this would come away feeling like they know the author like a friend. She also kindly includes resources for prodigals out there, and gives heart-felt encouragement to anyone reading to join her in her new found old friend, the Christian church. I look forward to hearing more from Ms. Bagato!

Holds your interest - very relatable - especially if you have ever fallen away from Christ.

This is an excellent book. The author tells her life story and then gives you examples of God's love with stories from the bible. It really shows you how God loves you and wants to welcome you back into his arms.

I read through this well written book and then found myself going back and reading the journey home again. This is a great book of finding the love of church family and the love of God.

I really enjoyed this book. Mixture of truth, fiction, and humor. Read in one day, couldn’t wait to see how it ended. Great job Susan!
