Purchase options and add-ons
How far will they climb to unearth the truth?
After barely escaping from General Nox’s compound, Andromeda and Caden are in dire straits. The two unlikely allies, desperate to save their loved ones, journey to the chilly mountains of Nor for answers.
But the journey is fraught with obstacles.
A vengeful spirit offers them a mysterious blade, setting a deadly hunter on their trail. A vicious disease is spreading across the land. On top of that, an ancient might just unleash chaos upon the world. Rumor has it that the Jester—some kind of powerful, otherworldly being—will rise soon.
Yikes.
As they climb, one thing is clear: If the cold doesn’t kill them, their enemies will...
And they’ve made some powerful enemies.
Filled with adventure, Blade of Night and Winter is the second book in the Shadow and Ruin series. This YA epic fantasy is loaded with heart stopping action and suspense, irresistible secrets, and the true power of friendship.

About the authors
Ryver Knight is a YA Fantasy author from Ontario, Canada. When she’s not studying alchemy with goblins or drinking tea with elves, you can find her crafting nonsensical stories in her writing cave.
She’s an avid reader (duh) who eats an unhealthy amount of sugar, loves listening to rad tunes, and may or may not be lacking vitamin D.
Smoke and Spells is her debut novel.

And oh, I almost forgot!
Her greatest joy is knowing that people are reading and enjoying her work. Every single purchase, review, and download she gets makes her day a little brighter. You’re the best! 😊
Kris grew up reading classic novels to her mother. From these moments, she became fascinated with books and words. It was always the gritty worlds and the characters’ growth that drew her in, and she often found herself engrossed in young adult science fiction, dystopian, and fantasy.
A lifelong daydreamer, she finally decided to put down her dreams onto paper. She tried to write straight science fiction and then straight fantasy, but both never clicked. So now she creates worlds just a tad bit different from ours - a blend of the futuristic with a touch of the fantastic. Like so, Strands of Time, her debut novel and the first book in the Aeterna Chronicles, was born.
Kris holds a degree in psychology and lives in rural Ontario, Canada, with her husband and children. She welcomes your thoughts on her book. Connect with her on her website krisruhler.com

"Life and Death, right before me. Incredible." (approx pg 28) This simple phrase, spoken by a background character of mild significance, really begins to shape the novel’s plot.
Throughout Blade, we begin to see subtle hints of an older lore within the world of Shadow and Ruin–the lore of Life and Death, and the power of the Underworld. Based on what little is spoken about the mysterious Jester, I am confident this lore will be explored in Book 3. Additionally, there are several descriptions of either Caden or Andromeda to suggest ties to what I believe may be Life and Death incarnate.
“…under the Jester’s rule, the line between the living and the dead would be blurred.” (approx. pg 118) Now, more than ever, I am curious about the Jester and his or her connection to the character in the prologue of both Quest and Blade.
In Blade, we are introduced to several new characters of significance in this volume–and I love how each of them is written! Killian and Eris, though we only meet them at the end, add so much to the story, as does the Tracker. I am curious to see how the authors will integrate them into the story arc of Book 3.
As an ARC reviewer, I am tasked with giving my honest review of everything I agree to read, so there are a few pieces of constructive criticism.
There was one turn of phrase that was used in the last book (which I only noticed because I binged it before reading Blade): A character not realizing he or she says what they are thinking until someone responds to it. This is just one of those minor things that jumps out at me as I read, but quickly gets dismissed if I don’t mark where it is.
My second comment is that, while I feel the world is being more fleshed out, it still feels a little mysterious. I want to know more about Magus, what types there are, how they came to be and how their power is inherited. There are plot twists related to this question that could have been, in my opinion, slightly more foreshadowed if these things were fleshed out in Book 1. (To those of you who may interpret this as a criticism of the world building, I have grown up on a diet of fantasy worlds with heavier world building, and by default more information to wade through).
Overall, Blade of Night and Winter is a beautiful book with gentle world building, perfect for readers getting into the Fantasy-genre pool.
My only genuine complaint is that there isn’t nearly enough Aria! (At least in my opinion) It's hard to believe my favorite character might be the snarky changeling, but I love her interactions with Caden and Andi, and Elantris.
I had the pleasure of being part of Ryver’s personal ARC Team for this book, rather than reading through BookSirens. In exchange for a free, advanced ebook, I can honestly say that after reading Quest and Blade, I eagerly anticipate the next leg of Caden and Andi’s journey–which I hope will be released soon.

After a showdown at the compound with the general and his wife, they realize that they need to travel to another continent to rescue their family members.
I enjoyed this novel, it's well written and the magical system makes sense. The writing conveys the scenery and conflicts faced by the protagonists in vivid detail.
I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my honest review

Alongside their mischievous changeling sidekick Aria they continue to battle through and encounter more magical creatures and a treacherous mountain. As they make it to the compound they're confronted by old and new enemies and the truth about Eris and Killian.
Another action and adventure packed fantasy, can't wait for book 3.
