How far will they climb to unearth the truth?

After barely escaping from General Nox’s compound, Andromeda and Caden are in dire straits. The two unlikely allies, desperate to save their loved ones, journey to the chilly mountains of Nor for answers.

But the journey is fraught with obstacles.

A vengeful spirit offers them a mysterious blade, setting a deadly hunter on their trail. A vicious disease is spreading across the land. On top of that, an ancient might just unleash chaos upon the world. Rumor has it that the Jester—some kind of powerful, otherworldly being—will rise soon.

Yikes.

As they climb, one thing is clear: If the cold doesn’t kill them, their enemies will...

And they’ve made some powerful enemies.

Filled with adventure, Blade of Night and Winter is the second book in the Shadow and Ruin series. This YA epic fantasy is loaded with heart stopping action and suspense, irresistible secrets, and the true power of friendship.

Blade of Night and Winter, the thrilling sequel to Quest of Shadow and Ruin, picked up only a few days after Caden and Andromeda's escape from General Nox in Eleah. The writing and world building of both Ryver and Kris has improved greatly in the few months since Book 1 released. In both books, the information given is enough to be relevant and, in some cases foreshadow, but not enough to overwhelm the readers with needless information. From the prologue–using knowledge from rereading Book 1–I began annotating my ebook, speculating which pieces of the plot were going to come together in the end.

"Life and Death, right before me. Incredible." (approx pg 28) This simple phrase, spoken by a background character of mild significance, really begins to shape the novel’s plot.

Throughout Blade, we begin to see subtle hints of an older lore within the world of Shadow and Ruin–the lore of Life and Death, and the power of the Underworld. Based on what little is spoken about the mysterious Jester, I am confident this lore will be explored in Book 3. Additionally, there are several descriptions of either Caden or Andromeda to suggest ties to what I believe may be Life and Death incarnate.

“…under the Jester’s rule, the line between the living and the dead would be blurred.” (approx. pg 118) Now, more than ever, I am curious about the Jester and his or her connection to the character in the prologue of both Quest and Blade.

In Blade, we are introduced to several new characters of significance in this volume–and I love how each of them is written! Killian and Eris, though we only meet them at the end, add so much to the story, as does the Tracker. I am curious to see how the authors will integrate them into the story arc of Book 3.

As an ARC reviewer, I am tasked with giving my honest review of everything I agree to read, so there are a few pieces of constructive criticism.

There was one turn of phrase that was used in the last book (which I only noticed because I binged it before reading Blade): A character not realizing he or she says what they are thinking until someone responds to it. This is just one of those minor things that jumps out at me as I read, but quickly gets dismissed if I don’t mark where it is.

My second comment is that, while I feel the world is being more fleshed out, it still feels a little mysterious. I want to know more about Magus, what types there are, how they came to be and how their power is inherited. There are plot twists related to this question that could have been, in my opinion, slightly more foreshadowed if these things were fleshed out in Book 1. (To those of you who may interpret this as a criticism of the world building, I have grown up on a diet of fantasy worlds with heavier world building, and by default more information to wade through).

Overall, Blade of Night and Winter is a beautiful book with gentle world building, perfect for readers getting into the Fantasy-genre pool.

My only genuine complaint is that there isn’t nearly enough Aria! (At least in my opinion) It's hard to believe my favorite character might be the snarky changeling, but I love her interactions with Caden and Andi, and Elantris.

I had the pleasure of being part of Ryver’s personal ARC Team for this book, rather than reading through BookSirens. In exchange for a free, advanced ebook, I can honestly say that after reading Quest and Blade, I eagerly anticipate the next leg of Caden and Andi’s journey–which I hope will be released soon.

Caden and Andromeda continue on their journey to find Killian and Eris and not without being put in some difficult situations. They encounter some people not knowing if they are friends or foes but only to find that they have been betrayed. When they find the people they are looking for things are not what they expected. Lots of unpredictable and intense moments. Another great book in the series.

I enjoyed this second book in the series! I like that we did get more fleshing out of the characters, Caden and Andi, which is something I wished for more of in the first book. I also liked the more high stakes adventures they get into, and I’m curious to see how they tackle the next issue they’ve discovered. This is a solid book and I hope to read the next in the series!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Received as an ARC, I am leaving my honest review.I could not put the story down. So much suspense and unknown moments kept me glued to the pages! Andromeda and Caden are on the run. Their changeling lizard hiding in a backpack to help. Their journey is filled with danger and questions arise after they enter the Dead Lands. Spirits tell them of a prophecy that includes them, but have no answers as to how, just to beware the Jester. A gift is given which becomes useful as they seek to free Caden’s brother and Andromeda’s friend from the grips of an enemy. But all is not quite as it seems as magic and powers are discovered, an evil plan is uncovered, and they must run for their lives.

I received this book as an ARC from the authors. The world building is good, despite that I haven't read the first book in the series. The main characters are trying to rescue family members from a general and his wife who are trying to take over the world. They are accompanied by a magical creature whose magic they are unfamiliar with. As they travel to the general's icy compound, high in the mountains they encounter other magical animals previously unknown. They learn to trust each other.

After a showdown at the compound with the general and his wife, they realize that they need to travel to another continent to rescue their family members.

I enjoyed this novel, it's well written and the magical system makes sense. The writing conveys the scenery and conflicts faced by the protagonists in vivid detail.

This is a wonderful story. Andromeda and Caden are on a quest trying to save there friend and Andromeda sister from a very evil General Box. He is very powerful. There are lots of obstacles that include magic and sickness. A very powerful spirit helps them in riddles they have to figure out. This book is definitely a page turner. This is my first book by Ryver and won't be the last. I highly recommend this book. Happy reading everyone. Get ready for a great adventure. This is a ARC review willingly leaving my honest review

On the run from General Nox, Caden and Andi have to travel through dangerous terrain to escape including venturing though the dead land. Following mysterious visions and encounters with a forest spirit the duo are left in possession of a dagger and cryptic clues about the jester and the tracker.
Alongside their mischievous changeling sidekick Aria they continue to battle through and encounter more magical creatures and a treacherous mountain. As they make it to the compound they're confronted by old and new enemies and the truth about Eris and Killian.
Another action and adventure packed fantasy, can't wait for book 3.
