When I was a child I wanted two things. To Write a Novel and to be Wonder Woman and save the world.

Somewhere past 40, I realized the tights were never going to fit, and the only flying I was ever going to do was in a plane.

So instead, I write my Strong and Sassy Heroes/Heroines into the novels I pen…

I build doorways into contemporary worlds filled with magic, that allow all of us to be a hero to our own imaginations.

To me, every character is real. I walk alongside them as they discover that fear is the flip side of courage, that survival may just be a badge of honor, and that our flaws are an opportunity to emerge stronger and discover our own personal brand of superpowers—at any age.

I live in the heart of Michigan with my Fastidious Husband and a Feisty Yorkie named Napoleon. When I’m not penning the adventures in my next book, you can find me kayaking, hiking, and camping with my family and friends.

What was supposed to be restful and theraputic for retired FBI agent, Elle Adams and her bone dog turned into a the hint for a serial killer. Traumitized Elle, who had just lost the love of her life , sought refuge in the Upper Penisula Hat Creek Preserve. She purchased a run down camp ground with the intent to fix it up as a retreat for abused women and their children. She didn't count on running into her high school crush. Her harsh reality is worsened when Mia, her Lab, finds a human bone. Soon they are on the trail for more and facing the beginnings of a mean Michigan winter. There's solid police work and lots of excitement. There's even a bit of humor. Looking forward to the next adventure of Elle and Mia.

I have to say I felt the start of this novel a bit jarring but I persevered and everything started to come together. This is a departure for Ms. Rain from the cozy mysteries I typically enjoy. Much darker with only a passing nod to the paranormal, Echo features a serial killer whose work is exposed by Mother Nature. In the race to salvage evidence before it is obliterated by the elements, retired FBI agent, Elle and her "bone" dog, Mia, are reluctantly pressed into service. As more bodies surface, the killer begins to focus on Elle.

If you are a fan of Catherine Coulture's FBI Series, this is right up your alley. There's enough suspense to hold interest and characters are multi-faceted. I did only award four stars as I needed more on the strained relationship with Jacob and on August's history. I realize there's to be a second novel but I felt there should be more in the first installment.
I received an ARC of this book. This is my honest, voluntary review.

This mystery is also in Veil Falls but is more serious than her 2 cozy mystery series. I must admit I was hesitant as I don't like "thrillers", but this book was not like that. It is serious but not so bad to give me nightmares. We meet Elle who is retired from the FBI and Mia, her cadaver dog. They have come to the woods of Veil Falls to get away from trauma they both suffered. But sometimes what you were finds you and is not done with you. Near where she lives bones are found and it turns out there are more buried near where she lives. She and Mia end up helping to uncover a serial killer that buries his victims in the Hat Creek Preserve. I think of Mia, a chocolate lab, trained as a cadaver dog as the real heroine. That could be because I have my own chocolate lab. This was a good book and did not frighten me, but did get me involved in the mystery, I did really enjoy it. Some of the characters from her cozy mysteries are also in this book, as Veil Falls is not that big of a town. I do recommend this new series, hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The book was slow to start, with too many characters being introduced at once. By the time I got through 30% of the book, I was not liking Elle very much. She's crabby, surly, argumentative, and usually unpleasant to everyone, even to people she “likes”. When the guy she used to have some kind of romantic history with shows up, she acts like a 16 year old whose boyfriend kissed another girl at the prom and he's not much better with his smirkiness. All their interactions are on the juvenile side. I also had a hard time believing that a dog who was the “top dog” in the country at finding bones would not listen to the “come” command when called. Mia had hours and hours of training to be a bone dog but had never been trained to respond to one of the first commands a dog would learn for their own safety? Unrealistic. I was really hoping to like this book because I read a lot and I am always looking for a new series. I don't think this is it.

As a fan of Elizabeth Rain's I didn't think she could top her other series, I was wrong. Echo of Silence is her first in the Hat Creek series. And it is wonderful. From the first page to the last I couldn't stop reading and was wanting more when I finished. Elle and Mia are a force to be reckoned with and I can't wait for more adventures. Some of the characters the reader will be familiar with from her other series, and this just round them out more and allows us to get to know them better. With her usual fantastic character development and interactions it is easy to lose yourself in this book. And Ms. Rain sets up the next book and leaves you wanting more.

When i first started reading the book, i wasn’t impressed, it seemed like too many characters hit me all at once, i was going to stop reading the book, LUCKY i didn’t and decided to stick with it, as the book got more interesting as it went along, and i must admit i very much enjoyed the book and the characters, finding it hard to put down, the main character is interesting with a few twists to her abilities.
