Out of Play (Love in the Arena Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 36 ratings

Emmeline doesn’t date soccer players.

This rookie’s determined to change her mind.

There’s no other way Emmeline would rather spend her Saturday nights than watching the Storm play. But being a fan is where her love stops. To her, professional athletes are just a bunch of self-absorbed meatheads who don’t know a thing about the real world. She wouldn’t date one for a million bucks.

Between a professional soccer career and building his online persona, Grant is feeling the hustle of being a rookie. Nothing can stop him from reaching his dreams—except an unfortunate injury that puts him on the bench for weeks. It’s not all bad though. There’s a cute girl on the sidelines to keep him company. An amazing, uninterested, off-limits girl that he can’t stop thinking about.

Can Grant convince Emmeline to give him a chance?

Or will he stay out of play and miss his shot?

Kayla has loved to read as long as she can remember. While she started out reading spooky stories that had her hiding under her covers, she now prefers stories with a bit more kissing.

When she gets a chance to watch TV, she enjoys cheesy sci-fi and superhero shows.

Most days, you’ll catch her burning dinner in an attempt to cook while reading just one more chapter.

Kayla lives in the sunshine state with her husband and three boys.

Sweet Soccer Romance
I absolutely adored Out of Play!Emmaline (Em) is an elementary school teacher whose brother is the goalie and captain for the Florida Storm, a Major Arena Soccer League team. Grant is a rookie player on the Storm, living away from his parents, sister, and nieces. When Em and Grant meet, a flurry of situations happen that bring them closer together but also have them questioning it.I loved this sweet romance. I loved how Kayla knows her stuff about arena soccer. I loved that she most absolutely used some real life experience for some of the storyline.I certainly recommend reading Out of Play, but also recommended before reading it, to read the first in the series, Penalty Box. You don’t HAVE to, because Kayla gives enough background from it so those that don’t aren’t lost, but Penalty Box is a great read as well - so you might as well start there!*I received an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.*

I received a complimentary copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is book 2 in the Love in the Arena Series and can be read as a standalone. The book's blurb lets you know what to expect. Out of Play is told through Emmeline and Grant's pov is a sweet romance about two individuals unexpectedly falling in love. After her past relationship, Emmeline isn't interested in dating athletes. When she meets Grant, she can't deny feeling a pull to him but she's determined to stick to her rule. Like her, Grant's focus is on having a good rookie season and he's not thinking about having a relationship. Yet, he's drawn to Emmeline and wants to get to know her. As they spend more time together, the each have to do decide if a relationship is something possible. While there was instant attraction between them, their romance was a slow burn. Emmeline had good reasons to protect her heart and I liked how Grant won her over with his honesty and how careful he was with her feelings. The romance was a clean one consisting of descriptive, but not steamy, kissing and no cursing was used. I enjoyed seeing the dynamics of the team and reading about the sport. Overall, this was a great follow up to the first book and I would like to read more from this series.

This book is the second book in the Love in the Arena series, and it was just as entertaining as the first book in the series. The author is a new-to-me author, but she did a wonderful job in the writing of this book.
Grant is a rookie on the soccer team, and he meets Emmeline, while in the middle of a game. There is immediate attraction, even though, he doesn’t date fans, and Em has a no dating soccer players rule. They begin to flirt, and their attraction begins to get stronger.
An incident in the team locker room, results in Grant getting a black eye from Finn, Em’s brother.
Em’s teaching job gets her depressed, and she goes to Grant for comfort, but he breaks up with her because of all the complications.
Eventually Finn accepts that his sister, and Grant really have feelings for each other, and he helps Grant set up a real date with Em. They admit their true feelings to each other, an finally reach their HEA.

Loved this! Did I immediately start reading book two after I finished the first?! Yes. Yes I did. This is full of forbidden romance, teammates sister, and a nice helping of he falls first. Grant & Em are adorable together! My only wish is that there were more books because I have loved the Storm and definitely need more player’s stories!

From the start there was instant attraction followed by stern warnings to not even look Em’s direction. So in theory they shouldn’t have even given romance a thought, but rules are made to be broken. Multiple rules from multiple angles made this a fun read. This second book in the series was great! Loved getting to know the characters more, seeing how they all interacted, watched out for each other, and grew along the way. There were a few fun surprises thrown in as well.

This was a fun, quick read. Light, with a happy ending. Even though it's a sports romance, there isn't much in depth sport stuff but enough to know it's there. Characters from the previous book appear in this one too, although I think each book can stand on its own. You might be happier if you read them in order though.
Content: one or two instances of mild swearing, kissing.

I read and liked a lot of things in the first book in this series, but I wasn't a huge fan of the couple. But Grant and Em are my people! I really liked Grant; he was thoughtful, funny, charming and so, so sweet. Em was real and honest and human, even if she took her no athletes rule a little too seriously. I liked that we saw her bring her work home and how it can affect real life teachers seeing their students go through tough times. I also appreciated how Grant wasn't assuming soccer would be his life and wanted to have a back up plan, something not everyone thinks about when pursuing their dreams.

There were times I wanted to shake the both of them, but that's normal. Their romance was a slow burn even if their attraction was almost instant, and I really enjoyed that. I also enjoyed learning how people can use social media in the flirting/dating stage. When I met my husband, this kind of thing wasn't around so I am kind of perplexed as to how people do it in a non aggressive/overly suggestive way. I also really appreciated how Grant was willing to call Finn on his crap and the rest of the team for falling in line with him. I didn't like how quickly Em got over the betrayals that happened, but maybe that's just a personal thing.

I will confess, this series has made me more curious about arena soccer, but since we are only beginning to come out of quarantine, I will have to make due with footage of older games. I can't wait for the finish to this trilogy!

This is a great book that takes you into the lives Silas and Grant. You thought Silas was perfect, right? He's a great goalie, great team leader and of course the perfect big brother, Maybe NOT.
Read and find out the inner workings of Silas and his sister Emmaline. Cheer them on and and still want to give them a good shaking. A realistic view of friendship and sibling relationships.
Emmaline doesn't date aesthetes until she meets Grant she isn't even tempted to. Now she has a dilemma should she abide by her rule about dating or should she see where this attraction will lead.
Grant is really interested in Emmaline but everyone keeps warning him to keep away. They say Silas won't let any of them near his sister. It is it her choice or Silas's? Is it Silas's rule or hers? Will the black eye he is given change his feeling?
When he discovers the truth he has to make a decision.
I loved this book and the way Grant tries to make her life better. A really good story to take a coffee break with (or several coffee breaks). I did and I am glad I did.
