Cobalt: A Prequel Novella (Pretty Little Mermaids Book 1) Kindle Edition
Not far away, nestled in the Upper East Side is a cute and cozy apartment stuffed with books, well-worn furniture, and photos of the smiling couple of which I have been half. Here I am, running away like I’m fourteen again—and from a man who loves me. Yes, he loves me. He also betrayed me.
If I were just a twenty-three-year-old woman—as is stated on the government-issued ID I left back in our apartment—and not in my eighties, with a load of secrets heavy enough to sink this vessel, then all might easily be forgiven.
But a twenty-three-year-old woman I am not… and all is not so easily forgiven.
A keen young freshman. A siren at a crossroads. A chance meeting that changes everything.
Gina is a mermaid—a siren—on her land cycle and she has found a human mate she loves. In fact, they're engaged, but to overcome a mysterious betrayal she isn't sure she should forgive, she needs some time at sea.
So she stows away on a tall ship.
Seth is a precocious fifteen-year-old working on a school project, researching Cobalt Girl, a modern sailing vessel.
A chance meeting and a fog bank along the Carolina coast will change both of their lives forever…
Cobalt kicks off Pretty Little Mermaids, an urban fantasy series that follows a set of contemporary sirens unlike any you've encountered before. Siren magic, mystery, mayhem... The book itself, I'd give a full 5 stars for. It was awesome! I loved every second of it.
The narration was divided. Marni Penning was amazing, as always. She always sucks me into a story so that I can't stop listening. The chapters for the male main character, however, were narrated by Ron Butler, who I found to be less enthralling. And by "less", I mean I almost turned the book off and didn't finish it. My ears and brain rebelled against his tone and style. But I stuck it out and eventually became used to his performance. I'm glad I did because I loved the story.
Whether or not I continue with the audiobooks, I'm not sure. I may switch to the ebooks after this. This series is definitely one I want to continue with.
Things change drastically in a fog based accident that is ending the long history of the ship while lives are on the line.
The story is just a taste of what is coming in the series, "The Pretty Little Mermaids" and I am eagerly awaiting the first full book in the series that is expected at the end of November.
This story was about a mermaid in her land-cycle trying to decide whether to forgive her human fiancé for a transgression.
I’ve been hooked on her works since Born of Water. She writes for the YA crowd but delivers stories that appeal to all ages. This novella introduces us to Gina, said mermaid, and Seth, a 15-year old high-schooler, on a short sea voyage. Seth is onboard to research his next school paper, Gina is running from a relationship that she’s not quite convinced she’s giving up on. It’s a quick read but I find all of the author’s work conveys the reader along effortlessly.
If you fall anywhere on the venn diagram of YA, romance, and mermaids, you’ll be advised to give this and at least some of her other works a try.
