About this ebook

Sometimes, your worst enemy is yourself.

“I shouldn't have brought Metaxysm outside the lab. Even looking at it now, I know something strange has happened with it.”

Abby is an underground inventor in the suburbs of a mid-size city where what you know doesn’t carry as much weight as who you know. Struggling in her new role at Soto Labs, she tries time and again to create a gadget that will earn her acclaim within the scientific community and, more importantly, among her peers.

Her colleague, Ben, a senior inventor with his own struggles, takes Abby under his wing. After a devastating blow to both of their egos, a careless mistake is made that immediately threatens the life of another employee, puts a target on Abby’s head, and sets the world at risk.

To stop the threat, Ben must make a choice that has the potential to affect all of humanity.

Lovecraft meets Clue In this fast-paced horror-infused tale of fear and the unknown.

Fans of horror, science fiction, or other uniquely told tales of the macabre will enjoy “Metaxysm.”

What people are saying:

"Metaxysm takes the reader on a colorful and fast-paced journey of one desperate science experiment gone wrong. For science fiction lovers, the story provides a variety of lab-related details as we follow the main character, Abby, and feel her struggles to fit in and make sense of her work-consumed life. Then there is plenty of chilling slime and grotesque characters added to the mix, from the beginning chapter all the way to each of the three possible endings, sure to thrill readers who are passionate about horror.

While only one ending comes close to the proverbial happy ending, all three of the possible conclusions leave the reader with a chill, and may even cause them to view the true cube-shaped ice cube differently in the future! Well-written and descriptive, however, we can excuse the author for not providing us with one solid ending and use our imaginations to further add to the tale, or come up with our own story for another day!

I personally am not a fan of horror, though I enjoy sci-fi and fantasy, but I wanted to give it a try. I definitely am glad that I did because I enjoyed the overall journey in following Abby in and out of the lab, navigating the challenges of her work, and considering all the different relationships with the characters. Parts of the book were very chilling and the endings ranged from dreadful to sad, but the author has a wonderful talent for fiction and I hope that she continues writing!"

"It was a pleasure to read such a finely crafted novel. The characters, plot, and themes drew me in from start to finish! There’s also so much heart in the book—from the characters themselves and from her. I love the themes of empathy, courage, and determination that are prevalent throughout the novel as well. She has a fantastic skill for suspense, intrigue, and horror, and knows how to create a rich world and draw readers into it so they feel what the characters are feeling and cheer for them along the way."

About the author

R.E. Holding was born in Iowa in 1979 and now lives in the hills of Missouri with her husband. When not writing, she is a full-time scientific project manager and soap artist who likes to cook, paint, draw, read, and learn.

Her interest in horror, science fiction, and fantasy goes way back to when she "accidentally" watched Poltergeist at age 5. While fascinated by the spooky cinematography, her irrational fear of clowns persists to this day.
