Timo Burnham has done a wide variety of jobs in his life, from things as different as night security, game tester and acrobatics instructor. From these jobs he's gathered plenty of fascinating material to use in his books. He enjoys both reading and writing fast-paced stories with lots of action, adventure and mystery as well as some drama and romance on the side. Maybe one day he will be able to sit still long enough to write one of those so called "epics", but until then his stories' are lean, mean and straight to the point.

When I am looking for a new book to read there are two things that catch my eye. The number of positive reviews and the book cover. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Personally, I think eye candy sells. A paltry 26 reviews did not impress me. However, the book cover was intriguing. I decided to look more closely at the reviews without reading them. I don’t like spoiler alerts or my read to be biased by others opinions. They were all 5s and some 4s. I decided the give this book a go. I am glad I did. It was really good. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Dawn of the Black Sun is a quick, absorbing, and very entertaining read.

The youthful Ryushu is someone to root for. He is quite green in the ways of combat, but eager and determined to learn. His stubbornness, in fact, is a defining and crucial trait that helps him get through some serious challenges in the course of the story. He carries the weight of the tragedy that thrust him out into the world, which gives a nice gravitas to his motivation for reaching the top of Mount Gharun, which would afford a slim chance at being accepted to train in the ways of the hyo masters.

I like how the martial-arts-inspired magic system in this world incorporates training not only for the body, but for strength of mind and spirit as well. This plays a huge part in Ryu's progression and provides hints to where his future talents may lie.

Zashou, the hyo master that Ryu travels with, is a unique mentor character by the fact that he's not very old himself. Near the end of this book we get a nice explanation of the titles and stages you would go through to become a hyo grandmaster. Zash is not quite grandmaster-level yet. He carries his own mental burdens and doubts. However, it is clear that he is a good man through-and-through, and also someone to root for, and a better teacher for Ryu than Zash himself thinks.

Then there is the Exile, who is very much NOT a good man. His story is told in short, intense chapters, building the layers of intrigue as he goes through his own progression from his weakened state at the beginning of the story to where he is at the end of this book. No spoilers, but I love how certain things are expertly revealed by the author along the way.

This first book provides tantalizing bits of backstory for Zash and some of the other adult characters, which I hope will be expanded on in future books because it's great stuff.

I feel like this book began right where it should and ended right where it should. There is a clear arc that brings the story to a great starting-off point for the next book. With several interesting plotlines still in play, there is much to look forward to in the Silver Empire series.

The dark opening really surprised me. Not a bad story from beginning to end. It's wordy in places and the pace is a bit too drawn out, but I enjoyed the story none the less.

This was a great book. Short, but well told! It almost felt like I was watching a classic martial arts movie with moments of heartbreak and suspense! Timo Burnham had written a very great tale about a boy that lost it all, and set on a journey of purpose and redemption. I also like Zash and the antagonist of this story: “The Black Sun”. I’m interested to see what trials and hardships that await Ryu on his path to power. Thank you so much for this story! It made me cry and cheer on for Ryu and Zash! The pictures were also cool, and added more to this amazing story! To those that love martial arts, Xianxia, and stories of loss and redemption.... This is the book for you!

FINAL RATING: A Well-Deserved ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed getting to know Zash and Ryu, and I can't wait to find out what happens next! This was such a fun read, and I really liked all the new creatures I met along the way. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good kung-fu fantasy!

This was a great read! Characters are well-developed and follow intriguing arcs, the worldbuilding is well-grounded while keeping supernatural elements understandable, the two plotlines are straightforward without needless convolution, and the underlying theme of unrelenting determination against all odds are well-presented for both the protagonists and the shadowy antagonist at the heart of what promises to be an excellent series. I'm already looking forward to the next book - can't wait!

Dawn of the Black Sun has all the makings of a great series; relatable characters, a world that's simple (but interesting) to navigate, good pacing and excellent combat.

Tonally, there are some issues. It reads YA/middle grade,(think avatar the last Airbender) but has 16-18+ moments that don't fit it.

There are also two separate stories going on side by side that never really intersect. Neither were bad but I wish they were more intertwined.

Recommend.

This book brought out a lot of emotions from the very beginning to the last page. Tenderness. Love. Rage. Hope. Despair. Relief. Surprise.

I enjoyed it. The fights were why I started and they didn't disappoint. I was happy to join Ryu and Zash on their journey and I'm anxious to read the next book.

Thank you, Mr. Timo, for your time and effort. It is appreciated. 5 stars (with a desire to give more)

5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of a fun adventure

I really enjoyed this read, it has everything you need for a fun time: sympathetic characters, a journey of discovery, entertaining fights, and good writing.
A world that echoes the atmosphere of the far East, with mysterious magic and strange animals (bonus points for the extra fluffiness), a good fit for the fans of martial arts and shonen manga, but even if you don’t know what those are, you’ll still be fascinated by the story of this young man that has lost everything and with his newfound master has now to gather the strength to fight and the true reason to do so.
The writing is vivid and effective, never boring, the main villain and his special sword are an intriguing mystery to be solved, and I look forward to the next books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Giant woolly doros !!!

Good, entertaining read. The universe is rather immersive. What stuck with me was two giant, northern doros ,pulling a massive merchant's cart which is the size of a small house! No horses or oxen in that world which I quite liked. There are few fantastic creatures like that in the book. Jinu was impressive too. Not going to spoil that one though.
