It can get a bit convoluted at times--but then the three main characters do things that are a bit out of the ordinary in the way in which they react to one another. Although the ending surprised me a bit--I guess all 3 had the happy ending they each wanted.

Easy to follow stand-alone. No editing errors p, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama.

This storyline has descriptive, emotionally charged writing that keeps the reader guessing. Intriguing twist at the end. Characters with distinct personalities and thought-provoking dialogue.

Omar looked at him thoughtfully, and then said, “Hey man, I don’t mean to be rude or nothin’, but you don’t seem real bright. You just go around sayin’ yes to strangers?”
“Yeah.”
“Life is gonna f’ you up, man.”

“There is no knowing, Susan. There’s only faith. You just proceed as if the world will be OK. You live your life like you’ll still be here tomorrow. Make plans like you’ll get a chance to fulfill them. Those are acts of faith, because no one really knows whether they’ll be here tomorrow. No one really knows anything.”

No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.

This was not a terrible book, but I was sad during the entire reading. I almost needed a scorecard to keep track of who was sleeping with whom and who they really loved. They all seemed lost and very sad. The only person I considered to be an innocent was the one left alone. Add poor editing to the dark content and it was not an enjoyable read.

This was a really fun and unexpected read. There were just enough twists and turns in the story to keep things moving along without it getting out of hand. I loved how the author developed the characters to the point that you had some empathy for their situations, but it wasn't over-the-top. As another reviewer mentioned, this is a great, quick read, that most casual and avid readers alike will enjoy. Looking forward to more from this author.

Warren Lane, by Andrew Diamond, is a suspenseful yet silly (in a good way) twisting, twisted noir-caper in the style of an Elmore Leonard detective novel where you've got a whole bunch of (mostly) rotten, deceitful characters tripping over themselves to screw each other, often literally. Diamond populates his rookie novel with a quintet of well-sketched out characters you'd never want in your own life: An itinerant, drug-addled, identity-stealing house sitter, an importer-exporter who's burning both ends of the candle and pushing his future to a nasty legal conclusion, a seedy private eye trying to do his job and search for the dirt on others before they find it on him, an occasionally-nymphomaniac former fashion model looking for a future in the legal profession - who might be playing one boyfriend against the other and a jilted wife (looking to dump her cheating husband) who's putting more than just her legal case in the hands of a guy she thinks is a private eye.
Diamond, with quick assertive dialogue, doesn't mince words and gets right to the action. That's not to say he doesn't craft a good phrase and every few turns of the page gives you a small descriptive delight. Like this passage, where the title character Warren Lane is described by an employee: "Maxine had once remarked that watching Lane talk to a woman was like watching a dog walk on its hind legs. It was amusing at first, but after a few minutes, you just wanted the unnatural act to stop. Maxine coached him on some basic manners, but kindness and decency were not native to him, and he was unable to express them with grace or ease. Instead, he came off as overly polite, while inwardly he chafed at the constraints of civility, like a thirteen-year-old boy whose mother had stuffed him into his Sunday School suit when he'd rather be out torturing cats."
Give this book a read and let it develop a bit. The first two chapters drag a wee bit, but it picks up steam, literally, without too much delay.

We all know funny people, right? People who tell stories well, crack people up at parties, but there’s a big difference between being a funny person and being a funny writer. Most people who try to be funny in writing fail. Not Andrew Diamond. He has the gift.

There’s a bundle of chapters in the middle of Warren Lane that made me laugh as hard as I’ve laughed reading <i>anything</I>.

This Elmore Leonard-Meets-Larry David private-eye caper features protagonist Mark Ready (just start calling him Warren Lane now), a ne'er-do-well boat-sitter whose only positive quality initially appears to be that he’s really great looking. That comes in handy for him at the end, but in the meantime, draws him into an insane course of dealing with four strangers involving betrayal, impersonation, smuggling, murder, and a whole lot of hilarious sexual situations.

The book has a sweet side as well, as “Warren Lane” gets the girl in the end. Even better, she’s the right one! First-time happiness may loom for both.

The writing is excellent throughout, offering more than meets the eye.
