4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 43 ratings

Battle Mages, Cunning Berserkers, Dark Rituals: Amidst the chaos of war, a girl finds strength in unexpected allies.

As the tribal Bandorian horde descends from the dead hills, war erupts between them and the magic-wielding Venesterium Empire, two cultures diametrically opposed. When Trisstiphina's small town is razed to the ground, leaving her world in ashes, she unexpectedly finds refuge among the Bandorian people responsible for the catastrophe. These are not your average barbarians; they are a clever and strategic society. Initially feeling like an outsider, Trisstiphina gradually comes to care for her newfound pack.

Life isn’t exactly easy for her though; on her journey she will undergo many trials and grow closer to her other young packmates as they fight battles both physical and mental.

When war reignites, the Bandorians are at an unfair advantage to the powerful mages of the Empire whose goal is to subjugate all the surrounding peoples and land under its control. Even worse, the mages claim to have a new and powerful secret weapon capable of wiping out their main threat: the entire Bandorian race. If the Bandorians fail to prove their strength, they and their way of life will be crushed by the Empire.

Trisstiphina and her pack take up the call to war but how can a group of young warriors possibly succeed against an enemy so strong?

From the first chapter to the last this book is very captivating. The scenes are well constructed, and the characters are very engaging. There are also many nuggets of truth to be found throughout the writing. Bravo and thank you.!

An exciting epic fantasy set in a Norse-inspired world of mages, dragons, and blood magic that follows Triss, a teen adapting to life with the warrior clan responsible for burning her town to ashes. McKinnon’s debut manages to build out a richly imagined world while escalating the war in a plot that kept me hooked. While the main character is a teen (and I enjoyed her character arc), I found more complexity and depth here than your typical YA novel. The story explores the differences between two warring societies not only through the eyes of the main character who bridges both, but from different perspectives on each side of the war. The characters are active protagonists, yet McKinnon shows how they are shaped and/or oppressed by the structure of their society, how that informs their choices, and the collateral damage that follows. I loved having the POV of a morally suspect character like Damitus. I also loved the “Tales from the Drunken Owl” chapters and bright spots of humor in the camaraderie and banter of Triss’s new clan.

This was such a pleasant surprise of a fantasy. The world was rich and drew me in at once, the characters compelling and fun, and the story engaging from the first page. I found myself loving Fae's world, and her story of becoming a Bandorian child was such a tense, suspense-filled journey, while still giving me time to just enjoy those small moments with the characters. And I need more!!! The secrets that were not unraveled, the plot threads that were not yet solved... while the first book is rich and compelling and Fae's character arc and the main plot arc fulfilling, I just know there is so much more for this world to offer, and I can't wait to see where Fae, Jaxon, Kiva and the rest will go from here. I think this Fantasy series is one I will follow and enjoy for a long time, and warmly recommend it to other high/epic fantasy lovers as well!

Really enjoyed this book. Good world building that feels organic and natural. The characters all believable with flaws and quirks to make them feel like you're reading about real people instead of fictional characters. The action is well written and easy to follow, hardly any plot contrivances that unnaturally protect the characters from harm or death. A good start on this fantasy series.

Mike McKinnon has crafted a medieval fantasy fiction work that is both enthralling and detailed, one that I reluctantly had to put down in order to go to work and sleep -- but had I not needed the cash from my job, or sleep in order to function, I would have read it from cover to cover in one sitting, it's that good!

His narrative, the way the characters interact and their manner of addressing one another makes for easy individualism among them, so your mind's eye easily differentiates how they look and act -- not an easy thing for any author to do, but Mr. McKinnon does it well. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for their next, best fantasy fiction reading adventure! I'm excited to see where the story goes from here in future series sequels!

This was absolutely wonderful. I seriously cant wait for the next one.

*random thoughts
I wish the special aspects of the main character had progressed more, im assuming that will be the highlight of book 2. Cant say more, wont spoil it.

*The wolves on the front cover kind of are misleading. I was thinking she was going to be running around with a pack of wolves not the case. Still awesome, also yes there are wolves, again wont spoil it.

The author paints the story well with his descriptions, and the storyline comes together well. The storyline made me always want to know what would happen next!

I did find that certain uses of description didn't line up with my morals, but one can easily skip through that.

Definitely a worthy read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyed Reading "The Bandor Child".

I thoroughly enjoyed reading “The Bandor Child”. It was a fairly quick read with interesting heroes and villains and one character who I currently dislike intensely but might become an important ally. Hopefully the next book will resolve this question. The author wrote the book from a semi-omniscient perspective which provides depth to the main characters as he delves into their thoughts, motives, and state of mind. This is the first of three(?) books which fully resolves the initial story and could easily serve as a stand-alone story. It also leaves a few things unresolved which left me wanting to read the next book.

It is an interesting and entertaining story with relatable characters and despicable villains.

This book gripped me right from the first chapter. It has the makings of an epic fantasy tale that will endure long after the final book is written. The characters are believable and engaging, and I found myself really caring what happened to them. The world is well described and vivid. Everything you could want.

This is a well-paced YA fantasy that sucks you in to the dramatic world of Tal’am, and the conflict between the Empire and the Bandorians.

Plucky young, Triss, captivates you with her spirit as she bravely joins with the militant Bandorians as they prepare for battle. Battle erupts! Pulling you forward with insight into both the heros’ and villains’ states of mind.

Debut author, Mike McKinnon, weaves a compelling tale in a society of mysterious magic. He shows restraint, leaving you eager for a detailed explanation of the magic of Tal’am in book(s) to come. Overall a vivid and enjoyable read.

This is a great book for this first-time author. The world we explore has obviously been crafted with care and I was eager to learn more about the setting. The battles was extremely well written and easy to follow. My only complaint was that the story ended somewhat abruptly and I was left wanting more. I would also love to learn more about the magic within this world, which is teased but not fully explored.

The book grabbed me and I couldn't stop reading and finished the story in a couple days. Looking forward to the next entry!

Absolutely captivating!
The world that Mike McKinnon has created here is spell-binding, dark and full of unexpected magic. From the first chapter this story pulls you in to a fantastical story and introduces extraordinary characters.
This is an incredible first book by a new author but hopefully not his last! I cannot wait for the next novel!!
If you love fantasy, this is a MUST READ!
