The counter-intuitive guide to get out of your own way, stop sabotaging yourself and take control of your life.

Byron Morrison knows exactly how frustrating it can be to feel like you’re your own worst enemy. For years he’d sabotage everything from his health to his relationships and his professional success. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to change, if anything, he knew exactly what he needed to do to create the life he wanted. Yet he’d get stuck in a never-ending cycle of making some progress, only to then lose motivation, fall off track or do something that would undo all his hard work.

Eventually, he had enough, and he committed to figuring out what was actually going on. In doing so, he discovered that the biggest barrier in the way of his success…was himself. It was the sabotaging voice that caused him to overthink and doubt himself. All his thoughts and fears that kept him trapped in his own head. His patterns and behaviors that kept him stuck.

Tired of taking one step forward and two steps back, he realized he needed to do something different. So, he gave up. Not on his goals and dreams, but he gave up being controlled by fear. He gave up living in the past. He gave up comparing himself to others. He gave up on being so hard on himself. And he gave up putting off his happiness.

And it worked. He was able to finally take his career to the next level, open himself up to more connected relationships, get into the best shape of his life and find happiness in himself.

Along the way, through extensive research and working with people in 15 countries, he discovered that there are seven mental barriers that all of us struggle with. It is these mental barriers that keep us stuck and stop us from taking the actions we know we need to take to create the life we want.

Maybe You Should Give Up’ is going to help you identify and break through those seven mental barriers. You’ll discover cycle-breaking techniques that have been broken down into easy-to-follow steps that will empower you to get out of your own way and stop sabotaging yourself.

Maybe You Should Give Up is a book about empowerment. About helping you break through everything that is standing in the way of the life that you want.

Byron you nailed it. This is a fantastic book. Getting control of one’s life by breaking their worst habits and empowering their own success. That’s the way! All 7 ways to take control of your life are wisdom that anyone can use again and again. We all have to be reminded of these lessons from time to time. This book has a very Brendan Burchard feel to it. Nicely done!!

As someone who loves self-help books I was excited to be asked to review an advanced copy of ‘Maybe You Should Give Up’.

From the get-go I was hooked, as after the first section I had so many breakthroughs about why for so much of my life I’ve been getting in my own way.

Everything made so much sense and it was an eye-opening journey about why we sabotage ourselves and how to overcome those negative patterns. Every section has allowed me to figure out what has been holding me back and empowered me to stop holding back and start making positive changes in my life. I took so many notes and highlights, that I decided to just read the whole book again and it was just as inspiring the second time through.

Going forward this will be the book I recommend to anyone who is at the start of their self-help and personal development journey. This isn’t just for first-timers though, as even though those familiar with the topic will have probably come across some of these ideas before, the author’s unique perspective will allow you to view these ideas in a new light. I have no doubt that applying the teachings will positively impact your life just like it has mine.

I recently read "Maybe You Should Give Up" by Byron Morrison and found it to be a really inspiring and motivational book. The author's approach to personal development and self-improvement is refreshing and practical, and I appreciated his focus on embracing failure as an opportunity for growth.

One of the things I liked most about the book was Morrison's emphasis on taking small, incremental steps toward our goals. Rather than relying solely on willpower or motivation, he encourages readers to create lasting change by consistently making progress. I found this to be a much more realistic and achievable approach than some of the other self-help books I've read.
Overall, I would highly recommend "Maybe You Should Give Up" to anyone looking to develop a growth mindset and overcome self-doubt. The writing is clear and relatable, with lots of personal anecdotes and examples that make the ideas easy to understand and apply to one's own life.

You’ve read this book before. Heck, even Byron Morrison, the author, says the ideas in his book are
nothing new. And he’s right; you read enough self-help books and they all begin to sound the same. The thing is, maybe there’s a reason most self-help books tend to center around the same principles, just in slightly different ways. Maybe it’s because those principles are sound and bear repeating so that we can truly understand and apply them. In Maybe You Should Give Up: 7 Ways to Get Out of Your Own Way and Take Control of Your Life, we get a new take on self-help principles that have stood the test of time.

Mostly, these principles involve removing the hindrances or “rocks in our shoes” that are holding us back, habits of thought or action/inaction that we need to get rid of to move forward. One of those is being reactive.

PRINCIPLE 1: GIVING UP ON REACTIVITY
Too many of us ensnare ourselves in the trap of reacting to everything instead of being proactive. Mr. Morrison calls it “being at effect.” It can be easy to do, especially these days when everything feels so out of control. What’s important to realize, and what makes his advice unique, is that
1) There is a distinction between a reaction and a response. A reaction is instinctive, whereas a
response is more thoughtful, implying awareness and a willingness to step back and examine
our reactions, then choose how to respond
2) Focusing on what we can control is most important. “It’s about getting you to focus on what you can control,” he says, “which, in every situation, is your own response.” That resonated with me.
3) Sometimes we might think we don’t have time to slow down enough to reason those responses.
“In those moments it’s essential to remind yourself of the negative impact that holding onto
those emotions will have on the rest of your day,” Mr. Morrison reminds us. Excellent point.

PRINCIPLE 2: GIVING UP ON LETTING FEAR CONTROL YOU
I really liked this chapter, as fear has totally been controlling me lately. Here are the important things to remember about fear, things that may seem obvious but can be hard to remember in the moment:
1) Ultimately, fear is nothing more than a story.
2) That story in your head isn’t set in stone. It is just an assumption.
3) Getting rid of fear doesn’t mean turning it off, since that can be hard to do head-on. Instead,
says Mr. Morrison, “You need to learn to break the cycle of getting stuck in your own head and
get a new perspective on the situation you’re in.” Reframe.

PRINCIPLE 3: GIVING UP ON BEING SO HARD ON YOURSELF
There is one line in this book that made all the difference for me. If there is nothing else that you get out of reading this book, remember that “you are not your results.” “At the end of the day,” Mr. Morrison says, “none of that [whether good or bad] has to do with your worth as a person.” If there’s one principle that I’ve found repeated in several self-help books, especially the self-compassion ones, it is this one. It can be so easy to think one’s worth is intrinsically tied to one’s success or failure at work or at home, but ultimately, that’s not our worth. Our worth comes from being human, from being alive, from being our unique selves. And when we’re in touch with our values, how we treat other people, and what’s important to us in life, we’re more likely to appreciate our journey for what it is and ourselves for who we are. Such a good truth.

Now, me being me, I would have appreciated a little bit more “workbooking,” a little bit more of a
challenge to apply Morrison’s words to my own life. It looks like there may be a separate workbook in the works, and not all self-help books should be workbooks in and of themselves, but I feel like
sometimes certain points don’t really sink in until you think about them in your own context.
All in all, though, this book was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to others seeking to “get out of their own way.”

Wow, this book really gave a refreshing take on the many self-help books out there. I like how it focuses more on the what to do less portion than the what to do more side. One approach may work more on one person than the other, but having more options to work on if you want to start working on yourself is very appealing.

Although it can certainly be hard to let go of those things holding you back, this book provides great encouragement and motivation to do so. Breaking down that encouragement into the 7 areas of one’s life where it’s needed the most is very smart and it’s simple enough for someone to follow through. I truly enjoyed this take on self-help and growth.

Many self-help books bring you through a process of what you need to do to achieve a goal. Most of the time you have to identify what is causing the problem and continuously work at it. However, what happens 3 months from now when you lose motivation? Do you start right over?

I really enjoyed this book. It was very thought-provoking. This book took a different turn from many other self-help books like this. The author said to give up and that might seem shocking. Why would you give up? You are not giving up on life but giving up on the impossible, giving up on the negative thoughts. That's when you'll be able to truly make progress in your life. A very phenomenal message!

5.0 out of 5 stars I feel more in control
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 27, 2023
I recently read an advanced copy of “Maybe You Should Give Up” and I found it to be an inspiring and thought-provoking book. I loved the author’s way of breaking down ideas and bringing unique perspectives to them, as this allowed them to make sense and click for me in ways they never have before.

Section one and how most people are living their lives being reactive made me realize how much I was stuck in this trap. It’s only now looking back that I can see how often I’ve been driven by emotion and acted in ways I later regretted. Now that I’ve been following the advice to slow down and process what is happening I’ve been feeling far more in control.

The other standout section for me was on short-term thinking. I’d never come across the idea of making decisions based on where you want to get to instead of where you are before. I’ve been using this new mindset daily to get motivated to exercise, get started on work and even follow through with chores. This has allowed me to stay consistent and I finally feel like I’m making progress!

Probably the most impactful section though was focused on not being so hard on yourself. This is something I’ve struggled with my whole life, as my response has always been to beat myself up and obsess over my mistakes. I’ve realised now how detrimental this behaviour has been and it’s been the shift I needed to finally learn some compassion and to be kinder to myself.

I can’t recommend this book highly enough to anyone who feels stuck, wants to get out of their own way or a practical guide to challenge and change the way they think.

A fresh and unique perspective on self-sabotage

Maybe You Should Give Up brings a unique perspective to the self help world with a fresh take on why we get in our own way and sabotage ourselves. I’ve found that most books in this space are generally surface-level motivational fluff. This is what really sets Maybe You Should Give Up apart, as it’s filled with actionable insights, real-life examples and practical step-by-step guidance on how to make changes in your life.

The book was concise, well written and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it from start to finish. I’d highly recommend this to anyone who wants to stop being their own worst enemy and take control of their lives.
