A look of pure hatred cuts across a packed theatre foyer, where one of the revellers has only hours to live.

The morning after a convivial evening, retired teachers Etta and Dora, on a homeswap from the South of Italy, are rudely awakened by Leon, the adorably mischievous Basset Hound who’s ready for his walk – at quarter to six! Taking advantage of the empty streets and pausing to admire the views over Kampa island from Charles Bridge, the trio find themselves instead looking down upon a murder scene.

Recognising the striking red dress she had seen a glamorous businesswoman wearing the previous evening, Etta identifies the victim’s body for Czech policeman, Jan Baloun. But despite notable successes when sleuthing on previous trips around Europe, this time, the friends simply want to enjoy their holiday. And Leon? This lovelorn hound only has eyes for the pretty she-Basset in the flat opposite.

When their new friend disappears hours after telling them about the dark days of Communism, and Etta and Dora themselves narrowly escape being attacked on their way home, the case becomes personal. What is the humorous Lieutenant Baloun hiding? Who was the traitor in the US Embassy, leaking vital information to the secret police during the tense days in 1980s Prague? And what bearing could that have on a crime committed nearly three decades later?

◆◆◆ Cosy fans, join Etta, Dora and Leon on an evocative delve into Prague’s hidden secrets. Can you piece together the puzzle before the killer strikes again? ◆◆◆

***

Prague a Secret from the Past is the fourth book in the The Homeswappers Mysteries, a humorous cosy series following the adventures of two retired teachers and their Basset Hound as they explore the most delightfully murderous European travel destinations and put their skills as sleuths to the test.

Written in British English, each light-hearted mystery is clean – no violence, sex or strong language – and can be read as a standalone or enjoyed in sequence:

0. Castelmezzano, The Witch is Dead – An Italian Cosy Mystery (A Prequel Novella)

1. The Watchman of Rothenburg Dies – A German Cosy Mystery

2. A Wedding and a Funeral in Mecklenburg – A German Travel Mystery

3. An Aero Island Christmas Mystery – A Danish Cosy Mystery

4. Prague, A Secret from the Past – A Czech Travel Mystery

5. Murder on the West Highland Way – A Scottish Cosy Mystery is the next book to come…

She resisted writing as long as she could. But one day she found an alluring blank page and the words flowed in that weird English she'd learned in Glasgow...

This series was a great find. Cozy mysteries set with a pair of retired Italian teachers, managing to fulfill their retirement dreams by joining a Homeswapping club to travel throughtout Europe inexpensively. And of course helping the local police solve a few mysteries.

I love this book, not only because of the characters but, as I am of a certain age, I was a big Shirley Temple fan. I knew she had a government career after her screen life. But the story of that career as presented in this book adds a fascinating layer to her life and enriches this book too.

Cute. Engaging. Light but nicely informative about the Velvet Revolution and Shirley Temple Black...and pleasant tour of Prague, good if you plan to visit

I have read all of Adriana's Italian Village mysteries and enjoyed them all. This next series of home-swapper mysteries is even more fun. It adds to the mysteries if one has been to these places and if one hasn't been to these places it makes you want to visit them. I just finished the Prague mystery (Secrets from the Past) and it is her best yet. She makes the characters so interesting and she describes them so well that you can picture them clearly. There are also good history lessons in each of her home-swapper books, so one is learning while reading and not just being entertained. I like her section in each book of her notes. I read them before I read the rest of the book as her notes give good background information. I am now going to start her book on the Scottish Highlands and I hope she keeps up her writing.

This book had it all! Romance for Leon. And a whole lot of Sleuthing for Dora and Etta. If you love history you will love this book. This book also mentions someone famous, you must read to find out!

The writer used the Lion the dog more as a story-leading character than previous books. There was quite a lot of "dialogue" from the dog. For me, this did not blend well into the genre of the book. (And I like dogs and have one.) I did end up skipping forward in the book many chapters. That is very unusual for me.
A positive aspect was that there was history of the city and country. Also there was detailed descriptions of the special places visited. It would be a wonderful if the author included a few photos of the more unique buildings at the end of the book.

Prague has so much history that it could be hard to include the enough of it. This book includes enough history to make the mystery compelling. There certainly are parts of its history that aren’t included, but I think including some other parts of Prague’s history would have been forced. I think the history we are given makes Prague intriguing, so you want to go back and learn more history.
I knew who the bad guys were, but there were still plenty of surprises at the end. I love the parts when Etta is figuring it all out and when Dora is enamored over the setting. We see plenty of that. Etta is mellowing out a little bit and Dora takes control a couple times also. So we are seeing some good growth in these characters. Leon adds to the quirky story as well.
The history is the best part of this book.

On a visit to Prague, Etta and Dora learn about Prague's past as they try to solve the murder of a woman they meet at a US embassy party.
Prague sounds like a lovely city.
The author always seems to surprise me with the outcome of the mystert.

Etta, Dora and Leon dish up another delicious 😋 mystery set in the beautiful old quarters of Prague. Brought back lovely memories of friends and of the Charles Bridge ! Wonderful descriptive writing with Adrianas' sense of humour to the fore 🤗 and a well researched story to weave around the three some! Can't wait for Scotland.......
