I would NOT have read it if I had known there was a cliffhanger. I hate when authors aren't up front with you about this. I prefer to wait and read one than the next. By the time the second book comes out, I will have forgotten the first book. Especially as I am an avid reader and after awhile, some stories blend into others.
This interconnected world of the Hill family is definitely one that has a lot of secrets and an unhealthy fixation on revenge. Granted, the desire to seek retribution is warranted. For some reason, I thought it would be Mason who would be the power player. I was wrong because I hadn't thought about Gabriel.
Gabriel is a pretty messed up guy. The things he had to do at 15 in order to help his family, mainly Mason, were heartbreaking. That's a lot of pressure on a young boy. I think that part of his life is why he disassociates while also managing to put up a facade in which he is charming. His actions aren't cruel like Mason's were. Instead, his mouth is. He uses words to get his point across, and everyone knows that words hurt more than physical altercations because bruises fade but words will eat at a person much longer.
E actually surprised me. She had a lot of guilt. I hated that for her. I also hated how alone she was. It didn't seem fair. The two of them together were hot. I was drawn to the fact that each of them felt guilt for either an action or encounter towards the other. It made this whole revenge thing more than just a surface revenge plot.
There is a lot more to come in this book. Still, so many questions that need to be answered. I'm not sure where this is going next, but it's liable to be good.
Off-topic, I really wanted to see Gabriel save Nate from a similar fate. I felt like he had no one and that Gabriel would be a good person to have in his life. I think Nate would also be good for the G man too because Gabriel needs to heal in his own way.
Seeing the fire, that killed the Hill parents, from Gabriel's perspective was nice too. It added a depth that I wasn't expecting.
