An eerie photo with a cryptic note unearthed 50 years later. A woman driven to solve a family mystery—at any cost. "A bewitchingly dark tale, as emotionally engrossing as it is boldly unconventional." —Kirkus Reviews
Juliet Barton is reeling from a devastating divorce and her career in shambles. Then she’s rocked by her mother’s sudden death. Buried in grief as she sorts her late mother’s effects, Juliet stumbles upon the final belongings of her uncle Henry, who died tragically in Italy in 1971.
Hidden among Henry’s effects is an old Polaroid of a mausoleum with a mysterious note scrawled on the back. As Juliet unearths more and more details that reveal her and Henry’s uncanny similarities, she finds herself compelled to go to Italy to locate the crypt in the photo, convinced it contains something Henry wanted to be found.
But as she tracks down clues to her twenty-something uncle’s cutting-edge filmmaking in Hollywood, renowned coverage of The Vietnam War, and link to a 1960s rock icon, Juliet uncovers a haunting truth that pushes her into the line of danger.
Will unraveling Henry’s hidden past put Juliet’s own future at risk?
In this brilliantly compelling, suspenseful, and intoxicating tale told through the interwoven narratives of Juliet in the present-day and Henry decades ago, Final Belongings navigates the trauma of estrangement across generations, the secrets we bury, and the things we try to escape at any cost.

"[A] singular, emotionally charged literary thriller....Beauchemin's genre-bending blend of historical fiction, mystery, traumatic character study, and dramatic search for identity will keep readers engaged both with the story's unexpected twists and also the hearts of the protagonists, which [she] lays bare in crisp, sometimes lyric prose..." —Editor's Pick, BookLife Reviews by Publishers Weekly

This book spans my life: I remember Jim Morrison appearing on the music scene, becoming a big hit with the rest of the Doors, and then watching him slide away in drug abuse.
I remember sweating out the Vietnam draft lotteries, fearing my brother might get "unlucky."
I remember the laughing, funny boys who used to hang around our house with my older brother: working on cars and rebuilding their engines, and when it got too dark to do that, smoking a quick joint and then playing ping pong in the basement.
I remember seeing some of them off to their tours of duty: some volunteers, others drafted. And I remember seeing them come home: some still physically whole, others not. ALL were altered. That is what war does to the soul.
So reading this book took me back to my past in an incredibly personal and profound way: re-awakening memories: some very happy, and many others I'd worked hard to bury and forget. I bought the book because I knew I'd have to let this simmer in my brain for a while, and then go back and read it again.....
The only negative thing I can say about this book is not a ding on the book itself , but rather on a very glaring error or typo: the name of JFK's assassin was Lee Harvey OSWALD, NOT Lee Harvey OSWALT. I'm quite surprised this type-setting error, or actual error, made it into the final book. I guess proof-reading is becoming a lost art.
That aside, this is the very best book I've read in a very long time.
The story itself is a delight to experience and has all the necessary ingredients; compelling and relatable characters, suspenseful twists and turns, and beautiful, engaging prose. I don’t want to say too much and risk posting spoilers, but the dual-narrative format works extremely well at captivating the audience, making the book hard to put down.
Overall this is extremely impressive for a debut novel, and I’ll be eagerly awaiting whatever she writes next.
From the outset, the layers of the multi-narrative structure are interwoven in ways that spark intrigue and surprise. The descriptive language plays like jazz, providing a palpable rhythmic undercurrent that is playfully punctuated by dry observations and biting metaphors. Oscillating between time periods and geographic settings, the chapters and scenes are clearly and effectively set, always attentive to the tone and credibility of interpersonal dynamics. As tension builds and the mysteries of the plot are revealed, a parallel intensification of the complexities and volatility of each character occurs.
Through touching on themes of regret and isolation, the book examines the destructive power of long-held guilt and trauma and compellingly explores concepts of redemption, absolution, and our perpetual quest for relevance.
