An eerie photo with a cryptic note unearthed 50 years later. A woman driven to solve a family mystery—at any cost. "A bewitchingly dark tale, as emotionally engrossing as it is boldly unconventional." —Kirkus Reviews

Juliet Barton is reeling from a devastating divorce and her career in shambles. Then she’s rocked by her mother’s sudden death. Buried in grief as she sorts her late mother’s effects, Juliet stumbles upon the final belongings of her uncle Henry, who died tragically in Italy in 1971.

Hidden among Henry’s effects is an old Polaroid of a mausoleum with a mysterious note scrawled on the back. As Juliet unearths more and more details that reveal her and Henry’s uncanny similarities, she finds herself compelled to go to Italy to locate the crypt in the photo, convinced it contains something Henry wanted to be found.

But as she tracks down clues to her twenty-something uncle’s cutting-edge filmmaking in Hollywood, renowned coverage of The Vietnam War, and link to a 1960s rock icon, Juliet uncovers a haunting truth that pushes her into the line of danger.

Will unraveling Henry’s hidden past put Juliet’s own future at risk?

In this brilliantly compelling, suspenseful, and intoxicating tale told through the interwoven narratives of Juliet in the present-day and Henry decades ago, Final Belongings navigates the trauma of estrangement across generations, the secrets we bury, and the things we try to escape at any cost.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is a refreshingly original work of fiction...a bewitchingly dark tale, as emotionally engrossing as it is boldly unconventional." —Kirkus Reviews

"[A] singular, emotionally charged literary thriller....Beauchemin's genre-bending blend of historical fiction, mystery, traumatic character study, and dramatic search for identity will keep readers engaged both with the story's unexpected twists and also the hearts of the protagonists, which [she] lays bare in crisp, sometimes lyric prose..."

When I borrowed this book, I wasn't even sure I'd like it - but a third of the way in, I bought it. I knew I'd want to revisit this book again, and also share it with my spouse.
This book spans my life: I remember Jim Morrison appearing on the music scene, becoming a big hit with the rest of the Doors, and then watching him slide away in drug abuse.
I remember sweating out the Vietnam draft lotteries, fearing my brother might get "unlucky."
I remember the laughing, funny boys who used to hang around our house with my older brother: working on cars and rebuilding their engines, and when it got too dark to do that, smoking a quick joint and then playing ping pong in the basement.
I remember seeing some of them off to their tours of duty: some volunteers, others drafted. And I remember seeing them come home: some still physically whole, others not. ALL were altered. That is what war does to the soul.
So reading this book took me back to my past in an incredibly personal and profound way: re-awakening memories: some very happy, and many others I'd worked hard to bury and forget. I bought the book because I knew I'd have to let this simmer in my brain for a while, and then go back and read it again.....
The only negative thing I can say about this book is not a ding on the book itself , but rather on a very glaring error or typo: the name of JFK's assassin was Lee Harvey OSWALD, NOT Lee Harvey OSWALT. I'm quite surprised this type-setting error, or actual error, made it into the final book. I guess proof-reading is becoming a lost art.
That aside, this is the very best book I've read in a very long time.

I have to admit that I kept swinging between keep reading or delete. I of course chose to keep reading. The storyline kept going back and forth in years but that was the crux of the story. I didn't like the main character at first but she finally grew on me. She wanted to know about her uncle that the family never talked about. How the story ends was so well done. I recommend this book.

Sarah is that rare type of author that makes you forget you’re even reading. Your eyes are on the page, but you’re not really seeing the words. Inside your mind, it’s almost like there’s a movie playing. That’s how effortless it was to read Final Belongings.

The story itself is a delight to experience and has all the necessary ingredients; compelling and relatable characters, suspenseful twists and turns, and beautiful, engaging prose. I don’t want to say too much and risk posting spoilers, but the dual-narrative format works extremely well at captivating the audience, making the book hard to put down.

Overall this is extremely impressive for a debut novel, and I’ll be eagerly awaiting whatever she writes next.

Sarah Beauchemin's fantastic novel Final Belongings delivers a highly-charged storyline that prompts increasingly hyperactive page-turning as it unfolds. At the same time, the protagonist's astute commentaries and self-deprecating charm leave one wishing that the book might somehow avoid coming to an end at all.

From the outset, the layers of the multi-narrative structure are interwoven in ways that spark intrigue and surprise. The descriptive language plays like jazz, providing a palpable rhythmic undercurrent that is playfully punctuated by dry observations and biting metaphors. Oscillating between time periods and geographic settings, the chapters and scenes are clearly and effectively set, always attentive to the tone and credibility of interpersonal dynamics. As tension builds and the mysteries of the plot are revealed, a parallel intensification of the complexities and volatility of each character occurs.

Through touching on themes of regret and isolation, the book examines the destructive power of long-held guilt and trauma and compellingly explores concepts of redemption, absolution, and our perpetual quest for relevance.

I found this story very intriguing, expecting certain things to happen only to find out it went into a different direction. The shift from past to present was smooth and easy to follow. It is an intense, on the edge of your seat type of story. After putting the book down, I couldn’t wait to pick it back up again. Kudos to Ms. Beauchemin for such a great story & l loved the cover, which is what originally caught my eye & drew me to reading the synopsis, then purchasing the book. I would definitely recommend this and I look forward to reading more books from Sarah Beauchemin.

I enjoyed the story line and development of the characters. You will have to figure out where commas go, as so many have been left out.

This book was one of the best I’ve read in a very long time. Suspenseful. Thoughtful of details. I could picture it all as I read it. Kept me awake at night because I couldn’t put it down. I had to read more. Love the final end. Not what was expected which is exactly why it’s so good. Don’t like knowing how it’s going to end. Love the surprise.

This story tells the tale of a troubled family. The teller is the niece of a man who had his own serious trouble who searched throughout his life to find his place in the world. When it seemed that he found himself, his life was taken, leaving behind more questions than answers. The niece never knew her uncle until she began her search to find out why her life was as mysterious as his.

Excellent, gripping even and kept me enthralled to the last page - once you get through the beginning few chapters as the character seems a bit of a twerp at first.

This is a really enjoyable read. Loved the character development in that it brought out most of the character’s flaws giving them more dimension. The story unpacked well and kept me turning the pages even though I should have gone to bed. Only criticism I have is there was quite a bit of grammatical errors. Great book anyway.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but needs proofreading

I liked this, but my enjoyment was continually being spoiled by the poor language. It doesn't appear to have been proofread - at least not by anyone educated. The language is sloppy and the author frequently uses words incorrectly. There is one bad mistake during the description of the car crash which killed Henry. One page which starts describing the accident talks about a 'red' car. On the next page the car has become 'black'. This is really shoddy and unnecessary and for this reason I have given the book only three stars.
